“What is black and white and blind everywhere?”
“Why don’t you call it both ways? Okay?”
Those are some of the nicer things shouted from the crowd at high school sporting events. That’s part of the reason the games have an official shortage, not just in New York, but across the country.
“I’ll be the first to admit during the game that you’re going to miss a few calls. You’re probably going to call a ball (that) should have been a strike, or a strike that should have been a ball,” Mike LaNasa said. “Sometimes, the timing is not the best.”
Fifty-one years on the diamond, and LaNasa has seen almost everything.
“The worst thing you have to watch out for is grandma with an umbrella,” he said. “I can come at you and there’s nothing, nothing you can do.”
He understands that the most important thing he can do is stay calm from the first pitch to the last.
“You must remain calm,” he said. “You have to be in control the whole time. If you get flustered, suddenly things will go in a bad direction.”
The game of baseball has changed. They also have a personality type, from the officials themselves to coaches, spectators, and even student athletes.
“Kids these days want more of an explanation of what’s going on. Why did it happen? Why did you do it and so on. The respect has changed quite a bit over the years,” LaNasa said.
While most games are incident-free, part of the national shortage of officials is because referees and others don’t feel safe while on the job.
“Now we’re spectators getting physical with a referee or a game official and things of that nature. It’s totally unacceptable,” LaNasa said.
Being an official comes with its fair share of frustrations, but it’s something LaNasa and countless crews have dealt with from the summer stage to the fall irons and beyond.
“Friday night lights, you’re going to get big schools, you’re going to get probably thousands,” he said.
The governing body for high school sports in New York recently met and said it will take note of what officials have to say to make their experience safe and rewarding.
“When the game is over or even at halftime, have someone with you to walk you to school,” he suggested. “That makes you feel a little safer. You wouldn’t feel like anything could happen.”
For countless hours of dedication, it sometimes seems more than the cost of doing business.
“You have to love it,” LaNasa said. “You have to have real dedication to do it. After you do it for a while, you kind of get hooked.”
Having officials means sports, sports means young people learn critical life skills on the field and on the sidelines. That leads to a lot of great things down the road.
“I’ve worked at different times, interviewed kids for different things. You start interviewing one of these kids and you kind of go, that’s our future, we’re in pretty good shape,” LaNasa said. “If you have any passion for the game, if you want to come back, you want to get into a good organization. We need officials everywhere.”
