The Auburn Tigers have drawn some criticism from everyone from domestic pundits to the average fan when it comes to what they’ve done on the recruiting journey.

In Sports Illustrated’s latest article by John Garcia, he highlighted five football programs that have been underwhelming on the recruiting journey.

Auburn’s class has only four members currently, but all are solid four-star players who could find a way to really play in their first two years on campus.

However, the lack of numbers should probably be a concern. It must be assumed that more will come with time.

Here’s what Garcia wrote about the Tigers.

Many in the industry point to the state of Alabama as one of the underhanded nation-wide talent producing states in football. Those venues will be on the table for a talent boost for the 2023 class in Yellowhammer state, particularly along the defensive line. It means the expectation under Bryan Harsin was on the road to successful recruiting, something that has yet to materialize.

Not only did the best quarterback in the state, Chris Vizzina, choose to play elsewhere (Clemson) even without Alabama in the mix, but option no. 2 Brock Glenn now looks like an uphill battle despite a head start and his legacy status. Back home, the local talent has escaped the trenched Tigers including Keldric Faulk (Florida State) and Tomarrion Parker (Penn State) in just the past three weeks. Even the first recruits of the offensive line in the state are likely to take their eyes off the plains.

It’s hard to paint Glenn and Faulk as potentially losers in this class. However, there is a lot of talent in the state for Auburn to muster and catch up in the next few months.

Beyond the complexities, not to mention the rising programs around the Tigers in the SEC, the class optics are a tough sell. AU has only four verbal engagements to date, the lowest number in the conference. Half of the group, for the glass-half-full types, boarded this month and both running back Jeremiah Cobb and wide receiver Karmello English are semi-locals on campus. Big Cat Weekend, the program’s July recruiting event, couldn’t come at a better time.

Big Cat weekend is going to be huge for Auburn 2023 recruiting class. It looks like there will be at least one engagement announced at the event. Maybe it can help boost Harsin and this coaching staff.

The other schools on the list were Florida State, Michigan, Ole Miss, and Texas A & amp; M.
