S1: This week, we are experiencing an exciting time for local sports. The Padres are contenders. A new stage has almost arrived. Big changes are coming at the university level and sports betting is on the ballot. I’m Matt Hoffman and this is the KPBS panel discussion. Hello and welcome to our discussion this week. I’m KPBS reporter Matt Hoffman. And this week Craig Elstein joins us. It is the play by Play Voice and chief marketing officer of the San Diego Suckers. He is also the host of the Padres Hot Tub podcast and gives public speeches for Way Football Club. We also have two guests here from Voice of San Diego, Andy Keats and Scott Lewis. We will have their views on some of the political corners for Snapdragon Stadium and the upcoming elections. We really want to welcome you guys all here. We will start with the most important game in the city, the Padres. They’ve been stumbling a bit lately, but they’re firmly in the playoff mix now mid-season. And they did all of this without their star player, Fernando Tatis Jr Craig.S2: First of all, he will definitely make an appearance. Tatis was allowed to swing the bat. He made some swings in the batting cage. He has been doing field drills for over a month to get his legs under him so that once he got rid of a broken wrist he suffered in the off-season he would be able to progress through league matches as quickly as possible. minor. That said, it will probably take 3 to 4 weeks before we see Fernando Tatis Junior back in training. I think anything before August 1st would be a bonus for the Padres and their fans. And does he miss it? Well, this team currently has 11 games, over 500. They did it on a slim ice skating edge playing with some of the weakest powers in all of Major League Baseball. Safe the least power in their division. So Tatis instantly, if it’s himself, brings power. And this is what happens. One of the most important points in the equation is whether the Padres can finish the job this year. S1: And Craig, you said they are over 500 and they will soon find out which Padres players will be in the next All-Star Game. He is being held in Los Angeles. Manny Machado will probably be there. But let’s hear from a fan of one of Manny’s old teams, the Orioles. S3: S1: That should be an easy answer. S3: No, probably not. I mean, I think I’m thinking about Machado, I think you could probably make a case for I don’t know, maybe. Minaya Maybe so many. S4: S3: Musgrove. Yes. Musgrove, of course. I mean, I think about Machado. Machado crushes a dunk. Machado is a dunk. Musgrove.S4: You picked the wrong person to talk about is.S3: Musgrove is Musgrove in Cy Young’s tear obsession.S2: Right now? Yes it is. He lost the last two, but he’s right there in the middle. Yes. Yes. S3: Yes. So, Musgrove, in the rotation and Machado, who is I have had the glorious pleasure of watching every game of his career except that unfortunate stint in Los Angeles. S1: S4: I just think we should point out that Andy he’s terrible when it comes to baseball, but also that. Tatis will come back and get hurt again. And that’s exactly what we have to live with, who is such an amazing player that every now and then he will play so hard that one of his limbs will fly out of his body. And we’ll just have to deal with the trauma of seeing it happen. They’ll put it back together and he’ll play again. It’s just that it’s like an angel that will fly into our room every two months, maybe every two years. It will entertain us and then it will go away. And you never know when it will come back again. This is just life with Fernando Tatis.S1: If you listen to this Friday, the Padres, are about to debut with their new City Connect kits. They are designed by Nike. And the look is very neon. Let’s take your point of view es, starting with Scott. S4: I like it. I like the story they told about why they connected it to Tijuana, Baja and San Diego, and what colors and looks do to do it. So I’m in, but I don’t know what we are. S3: Is this polarizing? I, I thought the reaction to this was pretty positive. S1: S2: Well, you know, I tell you something, even in our office, it’s kind of a show of hands and it’s half. We like it. Half. We hate it. When I first looked at it, I thought maybe Miami and their design team had two good ideas for City Connect and said: Oh, San Diego, you don’t have any here. Well, let me give you our alternative, because it has a very Miami Vice-like vibe with pink and mint. But I’ll tell you this, when I saw it in person, out at a baseball game when I was at the game on Tuesday and saw people wearing the city jersey, the pink is not as bright as maybe it comes off in some of the multimedia videos . It is a little thinner. And I’ll tell you what, I agree. I disagree with the seventies show character for numbers, which I think is a bit quirky. But apart from that, I feel they have done a good job. And I think there are a lot of jerseys in our city that connect the majors. S3: And compared to all the different combinations of weekend players they have had in the last few years, I mean, these are clearly the best of them. And I love that they will move a lot of units of these hats. These hats are going to sell a lot of these merchandise around this thing. S1: Well, I think nothing beats those military jerseys. Those are very beautiful. And we know this season started with the lockout and a new collective bargaining agreement. And we know that process has also given us an expanded playoff format. Craig, this goes to you.S2: I think those numbers have even gone down in the last week because every time the Dodgers warm up and the Padres have some slu mp, suddenly you see the gap opening. And I think there are now up to six games in the NL West. So winning the division will be real shooting. But getting one of those three wild points, I think must be not only the goal, but also the expectation for the Padres and their fans. This franchise cannot afford another collapse like last year. I expect them to try to add at least some rear from the outside and hopefully some relief to the mix as well. And then you go from there and hope that tatis health returns, maybe a couple of pitchers recovering from an injury allow this roster to fill up. S1: S3: I was surprised last year. So who knows? They did it. They already have. But my expectation is that they will be fine. S1: And Scott, what about you? I know you are a huge fan. S4: Yes, I think the distinction this year is that they are throwing. I remember. What was it like three weeks ago? But is that guy, did they have too many jugs? Go on. It’s like, no, just wait. They have a better pitch this year. And that said S3: One thing that is never a problem in baseball is having too many good players. People often try to turn it into a problem. And I have to tell you, it never resolves as a problem. S4: Yes, I think it will hold up. Tatis does other things, you know, I think having more people, more teams available for the playoffs makes it perhaps harder to get some players from some of those teams that are on the edge. So maybe there won’t be the hit swaps we’ve seen before or free, you know, some pre-free agency deals but they should be fun to watch. of the Padres, spending a lot more money going out and getting some of these great players. But let’s also take a moment to talk about Petco Park, where the Padres play and one of those responsible for its construction, a former team manager. Larry Lucchino. This week he was inducted into the Padres Hall of Fame. Scott, this is up to you. S4: I mean, you can look at the before and after of what that area looks like now. I think what is often underestimated is how public investment is. If the public invests two or 300 million dollars, you should see a transformation of an area. And we shouldn’t forget that both A was an important part, but B, that’s not possible right now. The money that was available for that type of investment came from redevelopment funds seized for the center that no longer exists. And therefore, we know, projects of a similar type, whether it is a sports hall or elsewhere, would require a much more public or private investment to be able to be realized. And so, but Petco Park is a gem regularly considered to be one of the best if not the best baseball fields in the country and is still under construction in the area due to what has been spurred there. So much to look back on. Sure.S1: You are listening to KPBS Roundtable. And this week our guests are Craig Elston of the San Diego Suckers, along with Scott Lewis and Andy Keats of the Voice of San Diego. Now, Craig, we want to reach out to you here. Speaking of locals. There are still a couple on the way. Let’s start with some of the news made this week by football. They are building a new home in Oceanside and it has a new name now.S2: It was May of 2021 that we had the official inauguration in the El Corazon sports complex area in Oceanside for a new fully privately funded sports arena and sports complex. entertainment which is under construction and is still on track to be completed by autumn no of 2023. That will be the new home of San Diego football. It should be the new entertainment hub for all of North County, San Diego. And this week has been a very exciting week for our organization and for the arena management group. That front wave credit syndicate has signed up to be the name and will be Front Wave Arena on at Oceanside. And that’s a ten-year, $ 9 million naming rights deal for the Sea Front Wave Credit Union, which has been around North County for about 70 years, has really put its branding on the new entertainment hub for North. County. It’s an exciting partnership. S1: And we know the football they’ve played in the sports arena which is in the Midway district of San Diego, and have been there for decades. And we know moving to Oceanside is going to be a big change and maybe a bit of a gamble.S2: Football has been a tenant all their life, right up to Juli V and Broncos to go, you know, the eighties leagues. They have always been renters. And right now they’re renters in a very, very busy arena with San Diego goals, with the San Diego SEALs, the strike force, no matter all the gigs. Yes, it will be a bit of a challenge to migrate our audience. It is a challenge that we accept. And for any fan who perhaps feels it is a little too far, there is another fan in North County who was making the long journey to get to the Midway District. So, you know, there will always be inherent risk, especially putting something in a new area. But I think there is a lot more reward in terms of being able to create something new and also generate a new audience. S1: And if you haven’t seen them, check out those renders. They look very nice. We also have Scott Lewis here from Voice of San Diego with us. And sometimes you might hear him talking about sports on the radio, especially when the redevelopment of the arena sport is on the news. The city had to stop and restart that process again. And so, Scott, I guess it’s a simple question, but maybe not a simple answer. S4: You should increase the height limit for the area to make this possible, and this should be voted on again in November. We’ll see if it goes on. There is a dealer, a bidder who has the leading edge type right now. They are setting the pace and this is the Zephyr Partnership. All three advanced offerings propose a new arena, along with thousands of housing units, and propose a whole new arena, as if they were about to demolish. It’s the old one and build a new one. And I still have a lot of questions about the arena. There were two offers that proposed to rehabilitate what was there, a bit like what happened at the Los Angeles forum. Those offers didn’t go ahead. So all three are busy demolishing and rebuilding a new one. That’s several hundred million dollars. It is also strange if they build an arena that is perhaps something similar to what they are building at Oceanside or what is the arena in the state of San Diego. The VA has likes it. Why build another one that size and yet it might be the only one they can afford. So why would you have to take down a bigger one to do it? They are like a lot of weird questions. I haven’t heard very good feedback about the arena. So the city is looking to drive towards a single bidder, though, when the elections go ahead in November for that height limit issue and we’ll see which of these will emerge or what combination of them will emerge to make that bid possible. How much money have they put into the initiative to get it through so that they can then go ahead and try to build something. But we’re many, many years away from that. S1: Yes, it sounds like that. There are definitely still some unanswered questions there. There is another project tto construction in progress, and we’re talking about the stadium in Mission Valley, the Aztecs and the Wave. FC They will start playing there very soon, just a couple of months in September. The San Diego rumor covered the broader transformation of the entire stadium site, SDSU West.S3: You know, I think, frankly, the State of San Diego and the people who pushed the electoral initiative that made this problem possible. they skillfully deserve to do some of the victory lap. They came forward promising a very ambitious time frame to take ownership of the land, to finance the development, to actually carry out the construction, to solve all the problems they would need with the manpower to come to an agreement. And you know, myself included, and I think a lot of other people were skeptical that they would be able to hit a lot of these goals. And they have. They created the earth. They developed the land. And since we’ve talked to Sports Arena and probably a handful of other projects we could talk about in town if we wanted to. Most people were unable to meet the ambitious deadlines they set for themselves. Now, the state of San Diego, as an arm of state government as opposed to local government, has an advantage on this front. But whatever the reasons, yes, they have set an ambitious plan to build that stadium and they have built it and it will open in time for the first week, just like they said they would. there is the new wave AFC. They are part of the recent expansion of the National Women’s Soccer League. And Craig, we know that one of your many jobs is the public announcement of this new team. How did San Diego take on this team? We know there are many football options in San Diego, even with the faithful.S2: It was basically sold out or every single match at Torero Stadium and, you know, as a rumor, you know, it’s exciting to be there. I hadn’t really been to the level, you know, of world-class women’s football on a regular basis and before now I’ve been there in person. And I think for a football fan, maybe if you are more of a fan who has been in many men’s games, many outdoor games, it might take a game or two to get used to the slight change of pace, but the talent is so clear and there is nothing better than going out one night and knowing it’s you We will not only see Alex Morgan, clearly the best striker in the world in his sport. But you will also see five, six, seven different players in the two teams, perhaps more, who are not only US national team players, but could be Swedish, Mexican and Canadian national team players. So NWSL is truly the highest level of women’s football in the world. It’s the equivalent of bringing, like the British, you know, the English Premier League here and having it in the United States. And I think it was just an easy sale. It’s a very interesting thing, though, Matt, and in short, it’s a very different audience. It is a very different crowd that you see out there. It is not the average crowd of Padre fans or even the crowd of loyal fans. And that was demographically fascinating for me, and I think it’s really exciting for them too. S4: They have experienced something that even Loyal was unwilling to do, which is they are moving into the big stadium. The Loyal has taken the approach that it’s best to be in smaller stadiums for these early years as they build their brand and are following it, you know, make sure they are in such a small full stadium rather than half full stadium which is big. And the wave just said, now let’s go, let’s go straight into the big stadium. Let’s see how it goes. This is a big and bold risk and an interesting decision for them to make. And I think it illustrates it too and in. A kind of major league soccer, although this is useful for the faithful who are much more involved in the real estate and wealth creation of that business than in the straight football side of the business. And I think this is playing out in the way these two teams are getting closer to their short term futures here.S1: And then moving on to our final argument, they never say they mix sports and politics, but that’s kind of what California is doing November. Let’s talk about the news that two sports are voting m measures will be at the next ballot. One has to do with online betting and another with in-person bookmakers. We know it’s been a while since the US Supreme Court opened its doors to legalized sports betting. But Scott, the native tribes, have had their own gambling industries for a while. S4: So they would have bookmakers inside their casinos, which I think many people who have been to Las Vegas casinos would recognize. And that’s what they want to do. They want to limit it there. And at four racetracks around the state, they are also running many ads against the other initiative. And this is sponsored by some of the big players in online gaming that have emerged. FanDuel and DraftKings. Now, many states have moved on with online gambling after some legal opinions and rulings have emerged. But this so that the online one would allow them, with a significant initial investment, to allow companies to host online platforms for sports gaming. Tribal sports betting would only allow these casinos located in tribal lands to host sports betting. It wouldn’t have an online component. So one of the questions people keep asking is what if they both pass? I think there is a pretty reasonable opinion and I think it would hold up to the fact that they both could pass and c h mobile sports betting would be allowed and that these tribal casinos could also publish their own bookmakers. So what I think the short term impact is for anyone out there is that you will start seeing a lot of advertising about gambling, tribal casinos and online gambling and the horrors and benefits that come with it. It will solve the homeless, but it will also cause the homeless. Take your pick, there’s going to be a huge amount of rhetoric on both sides of this as people try, you know, to present the case to the voters. S1: With that in mind, does anyone have any ideas about, you know, maybe how normalized sports betting has become, and maybe allied with how it’s presented, you know, fantasy sports, it’s a big industry. We’ve also seen networks like ESPN and others, which mix the odds and other information about the game during game broadcasts. I’ve also seen a lot of these viral big bets tiktoks that pay people crazy. Is there a stigma about gambling or what do you think maybe erased it? Yes S3: I mean, you know, it used to be the thing, if you are if you are a gambler, if you like to bet on a couple of things, you would catch moments in a sports broadcast that maybe a typical viewer wouldn’t. with Al Michaels he would decide to talk in code about a score at the end of the game that has crossed the line. But, you know, but he never went out, he never would go out and he explicitly said what he was talking about. It is as if that veil had come off last year. Last year, you only had announcers talking about it openly. As one of the most popular segments on SportsCenter now it’s Van Pelt doing its bad beat segment, where people talk about the darker games that have had a shocking result that changed, you know, who got paid. It is certainly a big change. And I think we will continue to see how the world of sports media, you will continue to see experienced experts and verticals materialize, you know, establish themselves as sources of income for those media entities. I mean, I could also say that, like the people I know who live in New York, when it became easy to gamble online, man like the friction that went into getting a bet placed and paid was moving so significantly increased the number of people that are out there gambling I mean the number of people I know who were willing to jump all the obstacles that you needed to jump to get a bet and to get a paid bet. You take them all off and a lot of people said, well, in that case, I’ll definitely save some money. So you know, I think if, you know, right now, a handful of friends betting each. We can. I think in a world where everything is legalized, you should expect that number to increase substantially.S1: S2: And I think fantasy is really what opens the door. And in particular fantasy football, once it has normalized, we would have talked about it, which is gambling. It’s just a different version, so move on from there to more direct spreads and over and under. It was just another step. The window, it was already out. S1: Scott, go ahead. S4: I was really upset last year at Thanksgiving when I was watching college football, and I noticed they had lines, bet lines on all sports, ticker scores like. So it looks like, like, this game is 4pm. and here, you know, the less you are for Michigan. And it’s like, whoa, that was a big leap for. And so I think college space is really something to look at. There are still ads in the Rose Bowl, in the urinal that say, like, don’t bet on sports. You know, it’s bad for our mission and, you know, stay away from it. Nevertheless on TV they’re putting lines up there. There are a lot of mixed signals, but I think it has potential as really bad results. Let’s say you have a lesson in college with the famous football player and you lose a thousand dollars and you go to class on Monday after losing 1000 dollars. For example, is this the kind of environment we feel comfortable in with that student who is next door? And I think there are a lot of questions like that that it will be really interesting to watch as this just becomes part of life, as opposed to this thing which was, again, hidden underground and a lot more friction. And I absolutely believe what Andy said, like, if it’s if you break the barriers of how hard it is to pay cash and get a bed, and if it’s easy to push a couple of buttons to do like Venmo or easier for you I’ll have much more and participation. And then the downside to gambling might actually appear a lot more clearly. S1: We’ll have to leave our discussion there. I want to thank everyone very much for coming.
