The ACC and the Pac-12 have already discussed what is called a “loose partnership” that could end the season with the conference playing a “championship game” in Las Vegas, a source confirmed to CBS Sports.

The concept, believed to have been proposed by the ACC, is seen as a way for conferences ’public rights owners, ESPN, to increase the value of their current media rights contracts.

It is unlikely this proposal will have much impact considering ESPN has a certainty rate with ACC on a contract that lasts through 2036. The Pac -12 tries to survive after the loss of USC and UCLA to the Big Ten in 2024. The rights to the Pac -12 team without California power are now worth about $ 30 million per year, down from approximately $ 42 million per program with the Trojans and Bruins in the fold.

John Canzano first reportedly proposed the Pac-12 discuss a “loose partnership” with another conference Tuesday afternoon, noting several regular-season crossover games could be played in addition to the “championship game”.

Sources indicate that the proposal was considered a “power in numbers” movement. While the 24 combined ACC and Pac-12 teams will not have the effect of the 32 combined programs in the SEC and Big Ten, it will be something to combat the widening financial gap between the developing superconferences and the others.

With the Big 12 and Pac-12 in flux, ACC schools are becoming more aware of the media rights gap that can approach $ 50 million per year compared to the SEC and Big Ten.

It has been widely speculated that some combination of Clemson, Florida State and Miami might be fitting if the seconds choose to expand again.

The Big 12 is considering adding up to six Pac-12 schools to strengthen themselves, CBS Sports reported Tuesday. Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah are the main teams targeted and Oregon and Washington are also studied.

Meanwhile, the Pac-12 is just trying to stay viable. Tuesday, the league announced it was going to an early market to negotiate rights for the remaining 10 teams. The current Pac-12 contract with ESPN and Fox expires in 2024, although Fox is not expected to like the Pac-12 rights in the future.
