The Florida Institute of Technology announced it will be discontinuing five university sports programs this fall and shifting them to club sports.
The sports include men’s rowing, women‘s rowing, men’s cross-country/long-distance track, women’s cross-country/long-distance track, and men’s golf.
Florida Tech’s Assistant Director of Athletics Communications Christina Hardman said the school considers long-distance track a cross-country extension — which is why it’s five sports, and not seven.
Their rosters were made up of the same athletes, but “some of the athletes who were in cross-country didn’t participate in the spring track because they were on other sports teams,” explains Hardman.
The school said program alignment affected 40 returning students, including 31 men and nine women.
Athletics leadership has notified affected coaches and students and said the university would work over the coming weeks to finalize the details of the transition.
“This is not a cost-cutting measure, but rather a strategic decision to intentionally increase our competitiveness in our Sunshine State Conference,” said Jamie Joss, Director of Athletics. “Our resources are spread too thinly to adequately support each on a competitive level.
“Our athletics department is committed to leading the conference in the academic success of scholar-athletes while also running a highly competitive athletics program that brings pride to the university. This realignment will empower our 11 core conference sports with the increased resources and focus needed to better achieve this vision.”
Acting President Marco Carvalho confirmed that all scholarship-eligible athletes affected by this realignment will have their athletic financial assistance honored through the completion of their undergraduate degree at Florida Tech.
“Our students are always our first priority,” said Carvalho. “We will be working with them now and in the coming days to answer any questions they may have and support them through this realignment.”
This isn’t Florida Tech’s first sports contraction.
In February 2019 it was announced that the school would discontinue men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s golf.
In May 2020, Florida Tech discontinued its short-term soccer program, which competed from 2013-19.
US Department of Education data shows Florida Tech spent $3.1 million of the athletics department’s $10.7 million on soccer during the 2018-19 fiscal year.
Florida Tech is left with 11 varsity sports, five men’s and six women’s.
Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, soccer, swimming and lacrosse.
Women’s sports include softball, basketball, soccer, swimming, lacrosse and volleyball.
“The Florida Tech Administration and Board of Trustees understand and embrace the important role that quality university and club athletic programs play in the college experience of our many students,” said Travis Proctor, chairman of the board. “Moving identified sports to club programs rather than eliminating them underscores the university’s desire to celebrate the rich history of the sport at Florida Tech while also demonstrating its increasing commitment to the importance of club and intramural sports on campus.”
With a 3.67 GPA, the Florida Institute of Technology requires you to be above average in your high school class. You need at least a mix of A and B, with more A’s than B’s. You can compensate for a lower GPA with more difficult classes, such as AP or IB classes.
