Basketball courts are found at Woolen Gym, Rams Head Recreation Center, South Campus Recreation Complex, North Campus Recreation Complex, and several residence halls, including Hinton James, Morrison, and Craige.
“I really like going to Woolen Gym with a group of friends,” said Laolu Charles. “What makes Woolen Gym so good is that there are so many courts that it’s rare not to play. Plus, one of the easiest ways to make new friends is to play basketball at Woolen, as many students play there all the time throughout the week.
Volleyball is also a popular sport on campus which frequently hosts pickup games. There are three sand volleyball courts located at the South Campus Recreation Complex. Many halls of residence also have sand courts.
“I loved having the volleyball courts right outside of the freshman dorms as they were a great opportunity to start or join in a game of volleyball on weekends and after school. Classes.” said sophomore Jackson Peden. “It was a great way to unwind after school and gave me an extra way to be active that didn’t feel like the time commitment of a workout. I’ve come across a bunch people through these games and I’ve become even closer to the friends I’ve met elsewhere and played with.
For students interested in playing football, Hooker Fields is a solid option. Hooker Fields hosts pickup football games as well as several intramural sports. It is opposite the main entrance to Carmichael Arena.
“One of my favorite memories in Carolina was playing football on Hooker Fields, enjoying the sunset,” Charles said. “And Roy Williams came to watch our casual football game. We got to take a picture with him and it’s something I won’t forget.”
Other popular ways to get involved in organized sports are intramural and club sports.
Students can register for intramural sports on the UNC Campus Recreation website. No experience is required to join an intramural team. Students can form a team with their friends or join a team and meet new people.
For those interested in a higher level of commitment and competition, a club team might be a better choice. Information about the various club sports offered at UNC can be found on the Heel Life website.
“My advice would be to go to club lounges and try intramural sports,” said rising junior Shelby Koelz. “Battleship is my favourite. Look for a club sport to join even if it’s something you’ve never tried before.”
No matter what level of competition students are interested in, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in the sport and meet new people.
“My advice would be don’t be afraid to join clubs or play sports casually,” Charles said. “It’s a great way to meet like-minded people who might end up becoming your closest college friends.”
