A version of this article was first published in 2018, and we’re sharing it pretty much as it was because the entire Blue Monday corporate invention continues to be traded as “science” and there are only a limited number of ways this can be done saying that’s bullsh*t.

It’s the third week of January and with it comes the annual “Blue Monday” nonsense. To be perfectly clear, Blue Monday was a day chosen by UK holiday TV channel Sky Travel for an advert in 2005 to sell well-fed Brits sunny holidays – not the day billed as the most depressing of the year – and yet it continues to be used by retail and marketing companies to sell offerings, treats, treatments, and general loot for people’s fear each year.

The Blue Monday “equation”

[W + (D-d)] x T x Q M x NA This may interest you : The science of giving better gifts.

The “equation” for Blue Monday is a PR concoction that puts together, in multiplication form, quantifiable but unrelated things like the number of days since Christmas (T), your debt (D), your salary (d), and the average temperature/weather (W) and then divided by arbitrary values for low motivation and need for action. If it looks like math, it must be real, must have been what people thought. And although it’s a jumble of distinct and independent sets, you always get a very specific date, which is always the third Monday of January.

Information about the details of this equation has always been very vague because the best lies, fabrications, and misinformation contain as little information as possible. But if we seriously believed that this was a real equation, then that would mean that our motivation level is calculated in a currency and our need for action is a temperature (or vice versa).

The equation is abysmal bad and only there to make this nonsense seem scientific. It’s a bit like sci-fi plots that use made-up, scientific-sounding words for a deus ex machina. Actually, that’s worse. Sci-Fi at least has “fiction” in the title.

The only laudable thing we see emerging from this PR nightmare is mental health charities in the UK and around the world using the date to raise awareness of mental health issues and the stigma surrounding them. With one in four people experiencing a mental health problem during their lifetime and currently affecting almost 1 billion people, this is more important than ever, according to the latest UN data (2022).

Depression is a mental disorder that can affect anyone and can be the result of multiple genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental health issue, contact your healthcare provider or there are several online resources that offer help, information and a listening ear, such as: B. in the USA here or here. Depression should not be trivialized and definitely not used to sell vacations.
