When it comes to science and math, I’m more Philip J. Fry than Professor Farnsworth, but even I can appreciate the way the writers of “Futurama” clearly know their stuff. It would have been easy for the series to completely gloss over the details of some of the scientist’s ideas, but “Futurama” combines comedy with serious science, in part because David X. There’s a lot of humor and intentional characters on “Futurama,” but Cohen and his team fight hard to make sure science is promoted whenever possible. The media tends to vilify science, as people are constantly afraid of what they don’t understand. But in “Futurama,” Cohen and his team of writers wanted to enlighten the audience to the fact that science is good, in fact:
Ken’s theory is a body swapping theory written and confirmed by “Futurama” author Ken Keeler, who happens to have a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Harvard University. He came up with a way for Amy (Lauren Tom) and Farnsworth to get back into their bodies after Freaky Friday’s stupidity, and managed to prove it using math that was beyond my understanding. Cohen and other authors understand that sometimes science is not morally fixed and dry, especially in cases where personal methods are still in their infancy to be investigated in our time. Genetic engineering can be abused and potentially very dangerous, and there are many shows and movies that detail the possible evils, but “Futurama” points out that there are possible good things, too, such as treatment of diseases. In the end, the authors just want to explore science and explore ideas rather than fear them, and that’s really an honor.
Of course, since there’s a bunch of brainiacs in the writer’s room, that means there’s a lot of math and science humor lurking in the background, too. One that I even managed to find out is Studio1²2¹3³, because those numbers end in Studio 54. They have made math jokes accessible to people with English degrees, which can really be a miracle.
“Futurama” is a wonderful series, funny and also surprisingly smart, and that’s because Cohen and his writers clearly care.
