As students at College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University take their courses during the 2022-23 academic year, they have a new course to consider: data science.

For the past 15 years, the math and computer science departments at Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s have collaborated to offer a degree in numerical computing. The idea was to use math, computer science and a third subject – chemistry or physics, for example – to give students a modern trend in the explosion of data available today and growing in the future.

“Data is the new black gold,” said Bob Hesse, a professor of mathematics who is co-chairing the new data science program, along with Imad Rahal, chair of the computer science department. “Numerical computing has never been as successful as it was intended. We noticed that students seeking a specialization on a comp were selecting courses that would otherwise be a data science specialization. So, we realized that we should reframe, refocus the course selections, and rename the course Data Science.”

The new major should not be confused with the minor data analysis available from the CSB and SJU. This program, launched two years ago, aims to complement a specialization, whether in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), social sciences or humanities. The smaller one gives students the tools to analyze, visualize, and tell the story behind the data.

The data science course, on the other hand, is for students who not only want to use the tools but also want to modify or create new machine learning algorithms. If you like math, statistics and programming, and you want to use all these tools, this is the one for you.

“I was once one of those students who loved math but didn’t really know what to do with it, and that was the only thing that kept me from committing to a math major,” said Rahal, who majored in computer science. in 2001 from Lebanese American University, followed by Masters and Doctorates from North Dakota State University, and has been a faculty member at CSB and SJU for over 17 years. “I studied a lot of math and a lot of computer science and felt, ‘This is something I can use. That’s one thing I can find a job with.’ Our students really shouldn’t worry about job prospects, and if you want to stick with math, do it. But my belief is that data science will be wonderful career preparation and you will likely be blown away immediately by the experience you have.”

These futures can be in business, industry, research or education. Data scientists discover new knowledge and aid the decision-making process in virtually every major field. Positions include administrators, business IT analysts, clinical data managers, data analysts, data architects, data engineers, machine learning engineers, marketing analysts, mathematicians and statisticians. According to Fortune, data science jobs are one of the top choices for Generation Z, and Harvard Business Review said the field is one of the most popular of the 21st century.

Sean Landman ’10 is a good example of what’s possible. He majored in numerical computing, used it as a springboard for a master’s and doctoral degree in computer science at the University of Minnesota, and is now a research manager at Medtronic. He is an expert in data science and algorithm development for heart disease diagnosis and monitoring.

“I don’t think I even knew about numerical computation when I came to Saint John’s,” said Landman, who is from Maple Grove, Minnesota, went to Totino Grace High School and graduated summa cum laude from SJU. “I got involved in all sciences and was always interested in computer science. My parents are computer engineers, so I think I was genetically predisposed to that. I did some programming in high school, but I was interested in a lot of things. I took courses in physics and biology, chemistry and mathematics. At one point, I was considering a natural science course that would combine a lot of that. But numerical computing allowed me to take more math courses that I was interested in and customize my course more than if I had just gone with just math or computer science. I liked the flexibility of having both a big part of my degree.”

Grads pick 52 credits from extensive degree menu

The data science course totals 52 credits, 40 of which are common requirements. For acceptance, students must post at least a 2. Twelve electives credits support the major, which includes several classes that were not part of the numerical computing major.

“The new major sounds great and more appropriately defines the curriculum,” Landman said. “Data science is a description that didn’t exist a short time ago. It’s an important. They are programs. It’s a job title. It shows the connection of all these fields. It’s for people interested in programming and computer science, but more on the research side – like software engineering. It is also for people interested in mathematics, which can be very theoretical and academic. Data science is a way to take an interest in this and provide very specific applications.

“Companies are interested in data science and it is a growing field. That’s how you turn math into a career. You can look around you and find new products that are the results of data scientists making recommendations on your streaming service or Spotify, the things your Apple watch or FitBit will tell you, information about how you sleep…

Alumni applaud changes, say field crackling with opportunity

Even before Bardia Bajani ’20 graduated in numerical computing, he was introducing Hesse and Rahal to the idea of a shift to data science. On the same subject : As Omicron goes angry, scientists don’t know what’s to come. In fact, Bajani already lists the data science in parentheses behind his degree in his curriculum, which now includes a master’s degree in information systems management and digital innovation from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

“I was very happy to hear that they are making these changes. The data science course puts you in a position to maximize output from the tools available, as well as build some of your own,” said Bajani, an international student from Sweden whose parents are Iranian and who has since moved to England.

He became interested in entrepreneurship at CSB and SJU, met a business partner at LSE and is a co-founder of the FuzeQube Group, which invests in innovative ventures. The company is in the process of launching seven new brands and providing infrastructure for businesses to grow and share resources. He said the interdisciplinary education he found at Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s allowed him to synthesize the best training in computer science and mathematics.

“My honors thesis was not related to any of the formal techniques that you apply to any of them,” Bajani said. “Mine was about digital ethics. We are in a society where much of what we do is tracked and much of what we do can be quantified in some way. It’s not all positive that we have so much data in our hands, but it does offer a great opportunity nonetheless. Being able to model based on the data available to you is immensely valuable. As an entrepreneur, it’s extremely valuable because when I manage to quantify something, it’s not my opinion, but the data and the facts speaking.

“I’m definitely building on a foundation that was established in Saint John’s. I saw myself more as an analytical person before I took the leap of faith and joined the entrepreneurship program there. I still have amazing friends from that network, and that set a precedent for the rest of my career.”

Students from Colégio de São Bento and Universidade de São João work in a computer lab in the Main Building of the CSB campus. Starting this fall, a new specialty – data science – will be available to those interested in a combination of computer science, mathematics and other disciplines.

Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s uniquely positioned to deliver

Rahal said that the evolution of data science specialization is a natural progression of the discipline and that Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s are uniquely positioned with independent computer science and math departments (what you would find at a large university), but also in an intimate environment that allows students to work on research in collaboration with professors such as Rahal and Hesse. Hesse said such a combination, along with the liberal arts found at CSB and SJU, will produce graduates who will be able to tell a story or paint a figurative picture of how concepts interpret data.

“That’s what sets us apart,” he said.

Why do we not eat swans?

Swans have been a taboo food for hundreds of years, thanks in large part to their perceived rarity and beauty. In recent decades, however, their numbers have increased into the thousands in places like Michigan and New York, where the birds are called ‘destructive’ and ‘invasive’.

Are swans good eating?

Unlike horses, which are obviously not delicious, swans are fat game birds, a little different from the others we eat. A few years ago, superchef Mario Batali told Esquire about a single time he ate swan, describing the meat as “deep red, lean, slightly gamey, moist and juicy.”

Why can’t you eat a swan?

The real reason we don’t eat swans is because they are impossible to kill due to their bulletproof feathers. And if you killed them, i.e. slashing their necks in a ‘Z’ shape like Zorro, they would just come back alive when they reached 165 degrees C in the oven.

How does swan meat taste?

The verdict? Swan is, strangely, more like a duck than a goose. In fact, the closest thing I can compare it to would be canvas duck: dark, tender, smooth and clean in flavor.
