Two undergraduate students in Poultry Science qualified for the student competitions organized by the U of A Department of Poultry Science on May 25 at Poultry Science (POSC) Research Day.

POSC Research Day invited faculty, students and industry professionals to collaborate and share ideas on ongoing research on water efficiency in the poultry industry. As part of the one-day event, UPV / EHU students were encouraged to submit their research in both competitions.

Clay Maynard, winner of the oral presentation competition, said she thought it was important to share her research with some of the brightest minds in the poultry industry. His presentation, entitled “Performance and Processing Characteristics of Male Ross 708 Broilers Supplemented with Guanidinoacetic Acid,” received a research study that looked at ways to alleviate wooden breasts in cloth breasts.

Maynard suggested that the research he presented showed a different trend, which is why he considered it necessary to present this on POSC Research Day. Different levels of guanidinoacetic acid were added to the normal diet of chickens.

Jossie Santamaria Archbold, PhD in bird science. The student was ranked first in the poster presentation category with the poster “Vehicle Choice Affects Salmonella Bacterin Vaccines to Light-Brown Leghorn Pullets Cellular and Humorous Responses”. Santamaria’s research highlighted the need to study how the Salmonella vaccine affects birds.

“Chicken products that are not handled or cooked properly can cause salmonellosis in humans,” Santamaria said. “Salmonella vaccines are used to help alleviate the spread of Salmonella in chickens. With little information on the local and systemic immunostimulatory effects of Salmonella vaccines, I intend to continue researching ways to understand and improve their ability to develop and manage immunity. Salmonella infection is more effective in birds.”

Santamaria was excited to take first place in the competition.

“I am very grateful and glad to know that I was awarded first place on POSC Research Day,” Santamaria said. “It’s gratifying to see that hard work, determination and a passion for research can be rewarded.”

A committee selected several students to compete in both the oral presentation of the competition and the presentation of the posters. The committee consisted of Michael Looper, a professor and head of the Department of Animal Science; Rachel Hawken, director of genomics and quantitative genetics at Cobb-Vantress; Daniel Lessner, professor of science and biology; Fiona Goggin, Professor of the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology; and David McCreery, a nutritionist and water quality manager at Pilgrim’s Pride.
