NEW YORK – The next iteration of the internet is here and it’s called the Metaverse.

These are essentially digital platforms with places where people can flock and experience life in virtual reality.

Some see it as a new frontier with the possibility of owning real estate there.

The concept of owning real estate in the Metaverse is both simple and surreal: you buy and own real estate, but it happens in a virtual world.

“It looks a bit like real estate in the form of a digital video game,” said Andrew Kiguel, CEO and founder of Tokens.com.

Kiguel invests and builds Web 3 businesses and owns “real estate” on the Decentraland platform.

“Decentraland has approximately 45,000 packages available for processing,” Kiguel told Chris Wragge of CBS2. “There is a fashion district, a games district, a museum district. There are parks, rivers and different areas. “

The platforms are designed to be used on any device, so no VR goggles are needed.

Experts say the main purpose of owning a property in Metaverse today is advertising and special events. One example is the virtual fashion show and shopping in the newly built Decentraland building.

A real estate owner could theoretically charge a rent for the use of space by monetizing his investment. Kiguel says that thousands of people attended the event, and interest is growing overall.

“Last year, visitor traffic in Decentraland increased by 3,300%,” he said.

Real estate purchases are made in cryptocurrencies and prices vary by platform and package. Some cost the equivalent of tens of thousands of dollars.

For example, there are 64 billion packages for sale on Superworld, and some cost up to $ 200.

“What you are actually buying is virtual earth that covers the surface of the Earth anywhere on the planet,” said Hrish Lotlikar, Superworld Co-Founder and CEO.

Lotlikar says the platform structure is basically a virtual overlay of the Earth, dividing it into blocks.

“People know where they live … they know where they are going on vacation, they know where they are doing business,” he said. “They come to Superworld, buy those virtual property locations that correspond to places in the world that are unique to them.”

It is speculated that more popular venues will eventually increase in value, but as with any investment, there are risks.

Corby Pryor, founder of the Metaverse Infrastructure Company, explains: “When you buy a Metaverse property, you are really betting on the platform’s success and your space on that platform will be used by many. “

Pryor owns real estate on another platform which he says he has no plans at the moment and knows the future may be uncertain.

“The downside is that your investment goes to zero,” he said.

“There is only a certain allocated space and if you want to be a part of it you have to buy it,” said Claudia Pryor, Metaverse Creative Coordinator.

Costa is one of a growing number of women leaders in this industry. She also owns the Metaverse real estate.

“I bought it as an investment and also helped some of my friends who are up-and-coming fashion designers or artists to use it as an exhibition space, for example,” she said.

He says it was a lot cheaper than getting a store on SoHo, but the value today and long term is relative, especially in the uncertain cryptocurrency market.

“The bubble burst was a good thing because there was a lot of noise and a lot of things… of no value,” said Pryor.

Snoop Dogg and Justin Bieber were the first Metaverse real estate investors, and even in the virtual world, celebrity neighborhoods will always be more expensive.
