Steve Kaplan has led the University of New Haven for nearly 20 years, first as president, then as the university’s new president in a two-year appointment — but now he is said to be stepping down early because of “political university.”
The news, first reported by the Hartford Courant, comes just a month after Kaplan took over as chancellor and CEO on July 1, transitioning from president to another role. Kaplan moved to his most recent position as part of a transition plan to reduce his day-to-day duties with a two-year interim president appointed to handle those duties.
Kaplan is scheduled to serve as councilor and CEO until June 2024.
According to a letter from Charles Pompea, chairman of the board of governors at UNH, Kaplan left his job early because “certain faculty did a favor in helping him decide that one more year of university politics was enough,” he said. Courant. on Monday.
The newspaper reported that Kaplan will now take a leave of absence and will retire in June 2023.
