SALT LAKE CITY – A statement condemning sexual harassment and abusive behavior against women in Utah politics is gaining momentum across the state.

The statement, signed by more than 100 women on the left, right and center working in politics in the state, is being shared on social media with more women asking to add their names. Some are elected leaders, others are election workers and staff members. Those who signed their names include Lieutenant Governor Deidre Henderson, Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson and County Council Chair Laurie Stringham, Utah County Commissioner Amelia Powers Gardner, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, Sandy Mayor Monica Zoltanski, Senate Majority Whip Ann Millner, House Minority Whip Karen Kwan, Rep Angela Romero, Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera, and former Utah Congressman Mia Love.

“We are united in saying unequivocally that there is no place for harassment in Utah politics,” the post begins.

She notes that women across the political spectrum are subject to harassment and states “we are united in our determination to strive for a safe and healthy environment in which women can create and influence policies in all areas of government.”

The post originated with Deondra Brown, a victim rights advocate and former Democratic candidate for the Utah State Senate and Salt Lake County Republican Council member Aimee Winder Newton.

“There are many amazing and established women who have signed this statement because we feel we must have a sense of solidarity and unity for each other,” Brown said in an interview Tuesday with FOX 13 News.

Brown acknowledged that he was driven by the controversy surrounding Senator Gene Davis, D-Salt Lake City. The longtime lawmaker is facing an independent investigation ordered by the Utah State Senate after a former legislative intern made public an Instagram post detailing sexual harassment allegations against him. Senator Davis has so far not responded to FOX 13 News’ requests for comment on the allegations.

“Senator Davis’ allegations have brought this issue to the fore, but we know there are cases that have occurred from the Republican, Democratic side, across the political spectrum at large,” Brown said.

Board member Winder Newton said the statement they made resonated with women in politics. He sent a message to several of them who quickly agreed to add their names and caught fire.

“This is common. Sexual harassment obviously comes in varying degrees, but this is something many of us can relate to,” he told FOX 13 News.

Board member Winder Newton said he hopes the post is seen as a sign of solidarity with the victims.

“It’s not easy to stand up and speak out, especially when you have someone who is in a position of power that you are speaking against,” he said. “It’s not easy and so having the support of your sisters is a big deal. And the second thing is that it’s important to talk about it.”

Board member Winder Newton said there are many men who are allies and agree with their statement, but have kept it to women in politics. He said policies to address harassment and abuse can definitely be updated and more people should talk about it.

“Once people are aware of the aspect of sexist behavior or sexual harassment, I think it helps them identify ‘Are there things I can do better?'” She said.

Brown said: “Whatever we do to move forward, we absolutely need women from all sides of the political spectrum to be involved in these decisions, because it affects us all.”
