Washington, DC (CNN) Jason Simon ordered the Tesla Model 3 this April, eager to own an electric car.

He heard from Tesla in June that his car was ready, but withdrew the sale, losing the $ 250 fee he had paid. Simon told CNN Business that his mood changed this spring after Tesla CEO Elon Musk reached an agreement with Twitter. Musk has since backtracked and indicated he wants to leave the deal to buy a social media company.

Simon is one of many electric car buyers who have made a strong new impression about Musk and Tesla in recent weeks.

Driving Tesla has long been a way for consumers to demonstrate environmental and sustainable values.

Clients are deeply connected to brands that share their values, or represent what they aspire to be, according to Americus Reed, a marketing professor at Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Tesla has taken advantage of strong loyalty, recognition based on car buyers, and competes with top brands such as Apple and Nike.

“Strengthening relationships with those who really are in Tesla is beyond the charts,” Reed said.

Some car buyers are increasingly attracted to, or far from, Tesla, because of the doctrinal differences associated with Musk, including politics, freedom of speech, and corporate culture, according to cited interviews with 12 car buyers.

In recent months Musk has called Democrats “divisive & hateful” by joking that the return of Coca-Cola to Coca-Cola, a comparison made by Twitter manager Joseph Stalin, has challenged Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin to fight one by one for Ukraine. and warned that “the virus from the mind will destroy civilization.”

Simon said he feels Tesla employees have a stake in the company. Tesla shares have fallen 31% since Musk signed a deal to buy on Twitter. The S&P 500 was down 11% over the same period.

Simon thought the declining stock price suggested Tesla’s lack of confidence as its busy manager – Musk also led SpaceX – took on another project. Although Musk has since said he wants to withdraw from the deal, he could now face a long court battle if Twitter chooses to sue him.

Simon, a business manager in Philadelphia, said “there are people below the line who are not him who have worked long hours to earn those shares,” said Simon, a business manager in Philadelphia who said he is “very bad” for his employees getting opportunities to earn.

“That’s the real life stuff of those people,” Simon said. “It’s not good.”

Steven Kronenberg of California stopped Tesla’s roof order in the sun this spring after he saw Musk declare his support for the Republican Party.

He also said he would not like to see Tesla face a lawsuit from a California civil rights organization over its treatment of black workers.

“If someone wants to pay for Hobby Lobby, or Chick-fil-A or Tesla, they can do that,” Kronenberg told CNN Business. “I have many other options.” (Chick fil-A donated for some time to organizations that strongly criticized same-sex marriage and Hobby Lobby was the seat of the Supreme Court that ruled that the Alternative Care Care Act could not force companies closely held to cover some contraceptives for employees.)

Kronenberg said he was ordering an electric car from a Tesla competitor.

Businesses have historically seen some impact from taking political positions. Budweiser seems to have lost popularity in the Conservative states after their 2017 Super Bowl ad preferred tour, while Ben & amp; Jerry’s has received support from free countries that support same-sex marriage and Black Lives Matter, according to Vanitha Swaminathan, a marketing professor at the University of Pittsburgh.

Reed, a Pennsylvania professor, described Musk as a “lightning rod” that people loved or hated. He sees Musk and Tesla as defensive against the recent Musk culture damage because people are already divided over him. Muscles can benefit from stimulating strong emotions, rather than being careless.

“If you’re a public figure, it’s probably best to be tough,” Reed said. “Like, eh, anyway, General Manager of Ford, who’s interested?”

Swaminathan said the potential risk of Musk’s sale of Tesla and the brand may not be as significant as the carmaker has a strong brand that is known for its creativity.

“Tesla’s unique brand reputation could act as an insurance policy that limits the damage to the brand’s CEO position,” Swaminathan said.

Colorado’s Erik Corkran has long loved Musk, whom he sees as an inspirational voice for personal freedom. Corkran, who relies on a libertarian, said he loves to be unlimited, and has done a lot of independent work in his career. He loves the Tesla Model X he bought earlier this year.

Corkran said he is interested in topics of social justice such as race and ethnicity, but feels that they are too big a focus on schools and go beyond math or science. Corkran watched this spring as Musk experienced a setback when he moved to buy Twitter and weigh in on politics.

“You know what,” Corkran said recalling the thought in May. “I’m throwing $ 100. I’ll get Cybertruck.” With Tesla’s Cybertruck not yet available – production was originally said to start in late 2021 but postponed until 2023 – potential buyers could save a chance to buy one of the $ 100 deposit.

He hopes to deliver in 2024, when Musk says the truck is available.

Lisa Morris, who lives in Louisiana, ordered Tesla this year to save fuel costs during the long drive she always does to get her daughter to school. She said she will be the first of her friends to own Tesla.

Morris has a strong passion for politics, and said as an entrepreneur she would like to have 1,000 Republican customers, more than 100,000 Democrats [customers].

Morris said she was even more than happy with the sale after Musk announced he would no longer support Democrats.

“The man has to keep going and not give up,” Morris said, adding that they do not respect businesses that hide their support for the Republican Party.

Scott Wilson of California, who owns the Model Y, has ordered a second Tesla this year. But he said he had a second thought, and he thought he should stop the order.

“I don’t want Tesla cars to be the new MAGA helmet,” Wilson said. “I do not want to be seen as rich, nor do I want to be seen as a political conservative, a freedom fighter.”

Now, Wilson has kept his order. He said it has helped Musk appear calm on Twitter over the past two weeks.

Other car buyers say Musk’s efforts outside of Tesla and his political views will not affect their decisions.

Steven Cohn, who bought the Model 3 this year, said he sees Musk as an American dream and admires what he has done to combat climate change. But he also sees Musk’s political vision as “a bit of a reversal.”

“I will make my purchase decisions based on what I feel is the best price for me and my family,” Cohn said. “Not based on a political party.”
