This latest Supreme Court term featured the sharpest ideological divide in decades, with 21% of decisions seeing judges appointed by presidents of one party vote one way and judges appointed by presidents of the other party vote the opposite way. In this edition of the FiveThirtyEight Politics podcast, the team looks at the court’s rightward direction this term and what the conservative majority court could have in store for the future. They then detail the Democrats’ response and how the party could try to unbalance the court or limit the power of judges.

But first the team kicks off this SCOTUS-focused podcast by discussing a recent Gallup poll that found American trust in the Supreme Court at a 50-year low. The poll has inspired political commentators to argue that the court is putting its legitimacy in jeopardy by straying too far from national public opinion.
