Professional sports teams across the city of Chicago on Monday offered messages of hope in the wake of a mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Ill.

The NFL’s Bears, NBA’s Bulls, MLB’s Cubs and White Sox, NHL’s Blackhawks, WNBA’s Sky, and NWSL’s Red Stars made statements in honor of the victims and those affected by the tragedy that occurred about 25 miles north of Chicago.

CNN reported that at least six people were killed and over 25 were transported to hospital with injuries after a gunman opened fire on parade crews from a nearby roof around 10 a.m. CT. The suspect fled the scene before authorities arrived, but has since been arrested.

In response to Monday’s horrific events, the Sox announced that their home game against the Twins would continue as planned, but a scheduled postgame fireworks display was canceled. Instead, the club chose to take a moment of silence before the competition.

“Our hearts go out to the Highland Park community. The entire Chicago White Sox organization expresses our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the innocent victims of today’s horrific shooting and to all those affected by this tragedy.” , read the Chicago statement in part.

White Sox pitcher Liam Hendriks expressed his desire to see a change in the country’s gun laws while talking to reporters.

“Unfortunately, in this day and age, it is becoming all too common,” he said. “I mean the access to the weapon used in these things – something has to change. Something has to be done. Something has to happen. Because there are way too many people who are losing their lives.”
