In the 80s and 90s, when someone said, “I want my MTV,” they meant they wanted their music on TV.

Today, a few decades later, music television means something different than it did then. Now, it means that a viewer wants their favorite TV shows mixed with musicality. TV shows with songs, musical characters and jokes rooted in the history of music.

With that in mind, here are five new music TV shows to keep an eye on from your favorite streaming services this year.

1. Rap Sh!t on HBO Max

From prolific showrunner Issa Rae (of Insecure fame), this HBO Max series, streaming now, is a new comedy series that follows former classmates Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion) who reconnect years later. after leaving school to create a rap group based in Miami. Shawna is a “socially conscious” rapper. Mia is the brightest, with a huge following on Instagram. Rae is one of the biggest names on television today, so the series should be one to watch. Rae also owns the music label, The Raedio, in case you needed her good sound. Check out the preview below.

2. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (Season 3) on Disney+

The new series of the popular show was released on July 27. This season, East High shows you how to do summer camp. Fires, love, song and dance, what’s not to like? It was also in this show that Olivia Rodrigo got her fame. Rodrigo, although not a full-time cast member, will be a guest star this season. Watch the trailer for the new season below.

3. Beavis and Butt-Head on Paramount+

Did someone say MTV? Of course, this rough and tumble cartoon was born on MTV before the new millennium and has now been rebooted. It drops on August 4th. It is not clear how much of a role music will play in this show; will there be a music video stream to critique since the last session did so well? We will have to find out. 4. My Life as a Rolling Stone on Epix

Get Back aside, there’s a new rock doc set for world premiere, and this time it features The Rolling Stones. Set to release on August 7, this four-part series features individual episodes, each dedicated to a different team member. Enter what it’s like to be Mick Jagger or Keith Richards. 5. Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin on Peacock

Due out on November 23rd, this spin-off of the Pitch Perfect films is coming to streaming service Peacock. This is about the Bellas’ rival, Bumper (Adam Devine’s character). With the same feeling but with a new twist, this series brings the audience to Berlin for new a cappella jokes. To see also : Fall Guys suffers online issues as the game is free to play.
