Apple Music users can create public or private profiles to share what they’re listening to with friends and also see their friends’ habits.

Apple Music is one of the most popular music streaming services in the digital age, but users may not know that the platform also has a social networking component that lets friends connect through music. While there are competing options for streaming music, especially Spotify, Apple Music is a solid choice for people in the company’s device ecosystem. The Music app comes pre-installed on the iPhone, and users can experience the service with a free trial of varying duration. Also, Apple’s services often provide unique ways to connect with other users across the company’s portfolio, and Apple Music is no different. Users can simply use the streamer to find and play music, but they can also connect and share with friends.

Apple Music’s integration with other Apple offerings makes it possible to share songs and playlists outside of the Music app. Once a playlist is created, users have the option to share the playlist as they would any other type of media. This is best done using iMessage, which has the strongest Apple Music integration. There is a Music app for iMessage that allows users to share recently played songs directly with others via iMessage. Once the iMessage is sent, the recipient can tap the song to automatically open it in the Music app. It’s an intuitive way to share songs and playlists, but it requires leaving the app. Thankfully, Apple has a way to connect and share with friends right within the Music app.

Sharing starts in Apple Music by creating a profile, just like any other social network. Open the Music app on your Apple device, and tap listen now in the lower-left corner of the screen. At the top right of the ‘Listen Now’ page, there will be an account photo icon representing your Apple Music profile. Tap on that icon, and select ‘Set Up Profile’. Then, follow the instructions that appear on the screen to create a username, find friends, and share playlists. Users also have the option to add a profile picture or set their account as private to hide their listening history from others.

Connect With Friends On Apple Music

Apple Music’s social networking component is built right into the service, so finding and following friends is easy. Entering a friend’s name or username in the search bar — the same name that users use to find music — will bring up their profile in the results. Next, tap on a friend’s name in the results, which will bring up their profile. If their profiles, playlists, and listening history are all public, all that information can be viewed without following them. Otherwise, users have to follow their friends and wait for them to accept their request. Tap the red ‘Follow’ button below a friend’s username to add them as a friend on Apple Music.

Once people are added as friends on Apple Music, users can see what their friends are listening to without going to their profile. Instead, on the ‘Listen Now’ tab in the Music app, scroll down to the ‘Friends Listening’ section. This will be a piece of music that friends are exclusively listening to that users have added in Apple Music and show what friends are listening to all in one place. In addition, when a song or album page is opened in Apple Music, the service will show the profile picture and names of friends who have listened to the same song or album. Overall, Apple Music’s social networking component is just another reason why it’s so appealing to Apple users embedded in the company’s ecosystem.
