Planning to bring eight nights of free musical entertainment to Colon in August and September, Mayor Richard Holman said the city needs to find $4,000 in donors to put on the first-ever event — “Colon Music on the Canal.”

Every Sunday, from 4-6 p.m. beginning August 7, the city will host live music concerts at the shelter just off Illinois Route 84 at the intersection of Fifth Avenue at the Hennepin Canal Parkway.

“Hopefully it will bring some outsiders to Colon,” said Holman, who noted that it’s for locals to have a great evening of entertainment in their own backyard. Attendees are asked to bring their own drinks, snacks and lounge chairs to watch the shows around the canalside park shelter.

Entertainment for Colona Music on the channel will begin on August 7 with the “Almost Brothers Band,” playing country music, followed by “The Night People,” a 50’s and 60’s rock band on August 14. “The Glory Days Garage Band” takes the stage on August 21st to play 70s-80s rock before ending the month with “Funktastic 5” on August 28th, playing funk music.

The September bill kicks off on September 4th with “JD Aguilera,” a country music duo before the “Bob Kelly Duo” takes the stage on September 11th for Beatles fans.

The month ends on September 18 with the performance of folk music “Frankie Jo & Kinfolk” before the Sept. 25 finale, featuring country and rock acts “3 Wood Acoustic Band”.

Anyone interested in helping sponsor bands or donating money for the party should contact Colona City Hall at 309-792-0571 or Mayor Holman at rholman@colonail.com.

The mayor told the city council at their July 11 meeting that if he couldn’t find enough sponsors to cover the bands, he would fund the first event himself.
