SALISBURY, N.C. (WBTV) – The Piedmont Players will soon present The Sound of Music at the historic Meroney Theater in downtown Salisbury.
With music & Lyrics: Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II, The Sound of Music is a loud and heartwarming musical based on the true story of the singers of the Von Trapp family, one of the most famous concert groups of the era just before World War II.
Postulant Maria, the grandson of an Austrian monastery, becomes a governess to seven children at the home of Captain Von Trapp, a widowed naval captain. Through her trials and tribulations, Maria brings home a fresh love for life and music. The Piedmont Players production, directed and choreographed by Executive Director Bradley Moore, is a fresh take on the classic musical. This production features a much smaller cast than usual, 16 people, some of whom play as many as three roles; unit set – nothing comes in or out throughout the show; focus on characters, story and music; simplified costumes; and perhaps a slightly darker and moodier take on the usual world of the show. This production is unique to Piedmont players and perhaps even to the world.
For those who can’t keep the music to themselves, there’s a special SING-ALONG with The Sound of Music on Saturday, July 30 at 2:30 p.m. In this show, the audience can sing along with the actors as they perform on stage.
