TAIPEI, July 3 (Reuters) – Veteran Singapore singer Tanya Chua has taken home four top awards at Taiwan’s Golden Melody Awards, one of the most prestigious entertainment events in the Chinese world.

I’m afraid people will get bored of it,” she said at the ceremony in the southern Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung after bringing her mother as a plus.

In a surprise, Chinese rocker Cui Jian, whose song “Nothing to My Name” won a 1989 anthem for student protests in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, was nominated for Best Mandarin Male Singer. He was not there in person and read a thank you note for him on stage.

While Taiwan has only 23 million people, its music scene has exaggerated influence in the Chinese-speaking world, not only in China but among the diaspora, in part because of its censorship-free creativity.

The Golden Melody Awards celebrate not only Mandopop, but also artists singing in Taiwanese – also known as Hokkien – Hakka and indigenous languages, a visible sign of the government’s efforts to promote languages other than Mandarin.

Song of the year went to the Taiwanese-language “Oh Love, You Are Much Greater Than I Imagined” by the band EggPlantEgg.

Best Indigenous Singer was won by 83-year-old Osay Hongay, an ethnic friend from Taiwan’s eastern Hualien County. She gave her acceptance speech in her native language, which was translated into Mandarin for her.
