Toads are invasive frogs that threaten the survival of several Australian animal species. Scientists and nature conservation leaders have long struggled with how to stop the toad’s march across the continent.

This is where our new research comes in. An article that has just been published describes a computer simulation program we developed to help test tortoise management in the virtual world before strategies are rolled out in real life.

The program, structured as a video game, answers questions such as: should amphibians be captured by hand or captured? When is the best point in a toad’s life cycle to eradicate it? And how can one best balance effort and cost against reward?

We hope the program will help scientists and conservationists get a head start on their toxic amphibious enemy.

The cane toad disaster

The woodpecker is the ultimate invader, spreading up to 50 kilometers a year and breeding explosively. On the same subject : Walk Back Time With Street View and Map Archives.

What makes the toad really devastating is its weapon of environmental destruction – poison packed in specialized skin glands on the shoulders. This weapon can quickly kill native predators that take a bite, such as goannas, quolls, snakes and even crocodiles.

The toad was brought to Australia from Hawaii in 1935 to control beetles that damaged sugar cane plantations. While the toads had little effect on the beetles, they thrived in the wild.

Woodpeckers are now found all over northern Australia, and they are crawling rapidly southwest. In a few years, toads will be expected to reach the Kimberley-Pilbara corridor.

There, man-made bodies of water for livestock grazing are likely to provide tortoises with safe passage through arid landscapes and into the Pilbara region – an important refuge for many native species.

Managing cane toad invasions

The Kimberley-Pilbara corridor is now a crucial battleground between toads and conservationists. But toads must also be suppressed in landscapes where the species is already established. See the article : Netflix is adding 21 new movies and shows this week. And preventing the toads from invading Australia’s offshore islands, or eradicating them once they are there, is also crucial.

Achieving all this with limited resources is a struggle. We developed virToad to guide researchers and nature conservation managers in their decisions. virToad is a free and open source software program based on existing literature and models.

Unlike previous models, virToad simulates the vulnerabilities of tortoises at different stages of the life cycle, and the management strategies that can exploit them. These nuances make virToad’s predictions more useful than previous models.

For example, toads need water to breed and rehydrate, so virToad simulates management strategies along the freshwater coast. These include traps that lure tadpoles, young and old, by releasing chemical signals, mimicking amphibians or attracting insects (a food source) with UV light.

virToad also simulates a promising new strategy to release chemical pheromones to suppress the development of tadpoles.

virToad players can try different management strategies, in any Australian landscape and across time scales from day to year. Each can be performed in isolation or in combination:

By playing with different strategies and understanding the effort needed to implement them, virToad lets nature conservationists calculate if they have the people and budget to implement a plan on the ground.

So what worked best?

What is an anhydrous barrier and how can it slow down toads? This may interest you : China’s highest trust in science: a survey.

Our simulations showed that some actions worked better than others to deal with toadstool invasions.

In the tropics of the Northern Territory, for example, hand-collecting and capturing young people and adults made the most significant and lasting difference. In fact, a daily effort eradicated over a year toads. But this strategy is expensive and laborious.

The simulation showed that similar results could be achieved when adults and adolescents were handcuffed or captured once a week for a year – that is 85% less cost and effort than the daily strategy.

Unfortunately, hand-collecting toads one day a year had no noticeable effect – as happens with community-led toad-busting activities.

Likewise, fencing of bodies of water and trapping or chemical suppression of rump trolls had no lasting effect on the simulation of the NT tropics. However, these strategies may be more effective in other environments. For example, fencing of water bodies can be effective in the dry Kimberley-Pilbara corridor, where other water sources are scarce.

In our perhaps most important finding, small-scale interventions had insignificant long-term benefits. Our simulations showed that local toad populations were re-established one year after a localized strategy was implemented, regardless of the initial success or effort used.

This clearly indicates that a landscape-scale approach is needed to deal with toadstool invasions. And virToad is uniquely suited to guide leaders in this task.

Of course, our findings are only virtual. While we took steps to validate the realism of our model, real-world data on the impact of various management strategies is needed to confirm our simulated findings.

We hope virToad gives researchers and conservation managers a new arsenal in the fight against toads, by helping their decisions to be both scientifically based and cost-effective.

While the design is based on Australian conditions, it could potentially be used in other parts of the world. And as the crisis with biodiversity worsens globally, we hope virToad will inspire research into ways to deal with other harmful invasive species.
