Kathy Seurynck arrived at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport on Thursday, ready to board her flight to Sedona — but first, she piloted new technology in the Delta lounge that promises to change the way she and other travelers navigate airports of the future.

Dubbed Parallel Reality, the technology was unveiled at the airport on June 29 by Delta Air Lines and Misapplied Sciences, a technology start-up, and allows up to 100 airport passengers to look at the same digital in-flight screen, giving each traveler just a , summary of their personal information about the trip.

“It’s really nice to look at and see,” said Seurynck of Plymouth. “I never know the door. That’s why it’s nice to have a door and how long it takes to walk there and stuff like that.”

Located near the beginning of the Delta concourse, travelers can choose to try it out by showing their boarding pass or using Delta’s digital identity program at the kiosk. Pixels on the screen project millions of light beams that can be directed at a specific person. Motion sensors track travelers as they move, so no matter where they’re standing, they can see their flight data, but no one else can.

There’s only one board at the airport with this technology, so it’s limited to the thousands of people who travel through Detroit’s metro system every day. It’s just an experiment, a pilot, but the companies envision the technology eventually becoming commonplace at airports, guiding passengers from the security checkpoint to the gate.

Parallel Reality does not store personal information or use facial recognition or biometrics while the consumer is looking at the screen, says Albert Ng, CEO of Misapplied Sciences.

Hussein Berry, vice president of airport operations for Metro Detroit, said the technology will help customers travel more efficiently and promote a more inclusive travel experience by displaying information in a person’s preferred language.

“I usually call it awesome, you really can’t understand it until you experience it,” Berry said. “It’s simplified for travelers, it allows them to really engage with it, and (it’s) personalized for them.”

Berry said Detroit was chosen because it is one of Delta’s largest hubs and has “a centralized type of corridor that covers all of our local customers coming through or connecting customers.” Detroit is also where Delta introduced its digital identity experience last year, which allows customers to use facial recognition technology and passport data for check-in and security.

Berry said that while the “parallel reality” technology is in beta testing, he expects it to take off.

“It could expand quickly,” Berry said. “It’s important for us to start here … and understand exactly what technology gives our customers, employees … The opportunities are limitless. But now the idea is to understand what it means for us here.”

Ng told Bridge Michigan that the technology may be “applicable to many different venues,” including shopping malls, stadiums, hotels, resorts and other public spaces where there are many people.

“The whole goal of parallel reality is to create a very magical and seamless experience for everyone going through these crowded environments,” Ng said. “Parallel reality is a technology that is not 10 to 20 years in the future. It’s here, immediately usable for anyone who wants to engage with it.”

But some researchers worry about the implications of such technology for consumer privacy.

Sophia Brueckner, co-director of the Center for Ethics, Society and Computing at the University of Michigan, said that while she sees the airport board being tested in a “harmless way” with the optional participation of curious travelers, she predicted that “in the near future it is unlikely to be optional and will be used both for airport crowd control and for tailored commercial advertising as it expands to other venues.

“Consumers need to be aware of the implications of these technologies,” Brueckner said. “Instead of (the information) just being contained in your browser, it’s going to be all around you if these screens exist, and not only would that be really creepy and intrusive…we’re going to end up isolated from each other in our parallel reality. “

While Delta and Misapplied Sciences say Parallel Reality does not store any passenger data, Brueckner said consumers should “always be skeptical about handing over any data” and “opt for anything that tracks you in any way. “

“We get emails all the time saying the terms of service have changed, and we don’t read them,” Brueckner said. “You always have to imagine, for whatever technology you choose, how they’re going to use it to make money with you.”

But Terrance Tucker, a frequent traveler who used the Parallel Reality technology for the first time Thursday, said he has no privacy concerns and “is all for anything that makes the (flying) process easier.”

Seurynck, a traveler from Plymouth, said she believes most of her information is already available through other technologies.

“With the phones, they have all our data anyway,” Seurynck said. “I think it’s good.”
