Will Talton is the leader in the Greenidge Generation cryptocurrency data center in Dresden, New York.

My name is Will Talton. I am a father of three and a caregiver of six. I’ve been a New Yorker all my life. I don’t have a college degree, but I’ve worked hard and recently got lucky enough to find a fantastic new career, which allowed me to learn and grow in a high-tech industry, which is not easy to find in the north of the state. , trust me.

Recently, critics of The Post-Standard pages have called for me and my 50 colleagues to say goodbye.

I work for Greenidge Generation, a cryptocurrency data center and power generation company in Yates County. Critics have called for the closure of our facilities, citing environmental concerns and calling on the state government to deny our pending application for the renewal of an existing air permit.

We all live in New York State with different but similar stories, we all look for opportunities in this region as we watch our friends and children leave the region. Not because they want to leave, but because they have to leave.

Before, I worked at a local bank. Without advanced studies, it went nowhere; it was a dead end. A friend told me about an opportunity to get into a cutting-edge technology business. Greenidge hired me to work at his cryptocurrency data center and since there is no real manual for cryptocurrency and everything is on-the-job training, he allowed me to grow. I am now the leader in the cryptocurrency data center.

My story in the company is pretty typical. And it’s the story that critics are missing, and I don’t know why. But I do know how I feel working here – we offer opportunities to a lot of people who come from all levels of education, who just don’t have a lot of options in the area. I hear it all the time, they’ve been looking for work here and there, bouncing from place to place, and they just say, “I like working here.”

We pay twice the average salary in the area, with the opportunity to learn and grow in a future-focused industry. Now I go back to school at night and the company pays for it, which I would never have had the opportunity to do in any other job.

Opponents of our facility have asked the state government to deny us permission to regulate emissions into the air, which would shut down the facility. I support concerns about all environmental impacts, I am also concerned about the future of our planet for my children. But this is not a binary debate of the 1990s on business and the environment. New York can continue to lead the way in protecting the environment while embracing this new industry.

The current level of permitted emissions from our facility cannot represent more than 0.2% of the state’s ambitious emissions targets for 2030 and the company has offered to quickly reduce the permitted emissions in a An additional 40% and finally zero carbon emissions by 2035, five years before the state target for the electricity generation sector.

I definitely see more opportunities at Greenidge and growing my career. As a man of color, it has been very special for my children to see me working at the forefront of the economy.

Recently, I was able to bring my two little ones to the floor. They were just amazed. When they grow up, they will begin to see and understand the cryptocurrency. They’ll have pictures, memories of that visit, and they’ll look back and say, “Wow, we were part of that. My dad was part of the construction.”

I wish those who call for our closure could see what I see: a facility that poses no threat to the state’s important climate goals and offers an incredible opportunity to bring our region into the 21st century.
