Racism and discrimination prevalent in health care make it more likely that black women will be uninsured and unable to access affordable and comprehensive health care in the United States. Twelve US states, including many in the black-majority South, have not expanded Medicaid, the government’s health care program to extend affordable health care to more low-income people.
The U.S. federal government is not doing enough to address and eliminate structural racism and discrimination in the U.S., and the impact on black women’s health is evident. To help remedy this, the government should take concrete steps to protect and promote the rights to equality before the law, non-discrimination, information and health, including reproductive health care, for all people.
