These patients, despite their small numbers, accounted for a disproportionate share of the costs due to the more expensive nature of treatments and services.

WHA recently released a report on the Total Cost of Care for Medical Groups and Clinics, which looked at the cost of providing medical services to patients. The researchers used medical claims and enrollment data from the WHA All-Payers Claims Database (APCD) to combine the costs and payments of all health services and analyze what the state spent on health care between 2018-20.

The report shows the average monthly cost of providing health care organized by location of the primary care provider, according to Washington. The services were provided in 5 main categories, including:

The report shows the average cost per month of services provided to each patient. To calculate this amount, all amounts authorized for services provided to all patients assigned to a particular provider were distributed along with the number of patients assigned to the APA of the WHA. This amount was divided by 12z to get the monthly amount.

Some patients received little more than preventive care, while others received it because of various services or complex health conditions. But patients who managed multiple or complex health conditions accounted for 13% of all health care costs.

“This level of detail in Washington state health spending is the first of its kind,” WHA executive director Nancy Giunto said in a press release. “Knowing what our health care dollars are spending and seeing the relative health of our populations is a crucial starting point. The Alliance is proud to facilitate this discussion. Now real work can begin to address the cost of healthcare.”
