People know to call 911 for an emergency when someone or something is in physical danger.

Soon, they will be able to call 988 if a person has a mental health crisis. The short film for the National Suicide Prevention Rescue Line will come into effect on 16 July.

In Springfield, if you call 988 from area code 417, the caller will be directed to the national center for Suicide Prevention Safety run by Burrell Behavioral Health. Burrell System Director of Crisis Services Shalaine Periman expects the number of calls to increase once the dial – up code is active.

The National Suicide Prevention Rescue Line will still be available at 1-800-273-8255, even when 988 is active. Burrell Behavioral Health’s 24-hour crisis direct line for southwest Missouri will still be available at 1-800-494-7355.
