Soon, they will be able to call 988 if a person has a mental health crisis. The short film for the National Suicide Prevention Rescue Line will come into effect on 16 July.
In Springfield, if you call 988 from area code 417, the caller will be directed to the national center for Suicide Prevention Safety run by Burrell Behavioral Health. Burrell System Director of Crisis Services Shalaine Periman expects the number of calls to increase once the dial – up code is active.
“It’s hard to predict, but we’ve probably looking at triple the number of our calls. -the line that will allow us not only to operate at the hotline bank but to operate remotely without interruption, “Periman said.

Springfield has a higher rate of depression than Missouri and the nation, according to the Community Health Needs Assessment 2022. In addition, the Springfield community has a suicide mortality rate that is 60% worse than the national average.
Periman expects an impact similar to 988 to 911.
“As part of the (implementation) of 911 there was an increase in medical care, emergency medical care,” Periman said. “So we very much expect 988 to do the same thing – to change the public response, to reduce suicide, to reduce the number of individuals seeking healthcare as the ER does not. required, as well as involvement (reduction) in law enforcement. ”
Burrell’s mobile response will need to be improved as part of the reduction in involvement in law enforcement, a team sent to a caller when telephone intervention is not sufficient, Periman explained. The goal is to have a 24/7 mobile response team.

The crisis line will also work closely with 911 “to redirect calls to (the crisis line) instead of sending law enforcement.”
The National Suicide Prevention Rescue Line will still be available at 1-800-273-8255, even when 988 is active. Burrell Behavioral Health’s 24-hour crisis direct line for southwest Missouri will still be available at 1-800-494-7355.
