Telemedicine came on the scene as the nation shut down at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Historically, telemedicine, or telemedicine, was strictly limited by both regulation and payment policy.

But in response to the interruption of COVID-19 in-person care, all 50 states and Washington, DC have issued temporary waivers that allow clinicians to administer telemedicine care to patients living in a different state. from their supplier.

Juan Andino from the University of Michigan joins A Health Podyssey to discuss how interstate telehealth use has changed in the face of COVID-19.

Andino and his colleagues published a paper in the June 2022 issue of Health Affairs assessing the effect of waivers on the use of interstate teleshopping among Medicare beneficiaries during the COVID-19 pandemic .

They found that while the volume of interstate telehealth use will increase in 2020, out-of-state telehealth use will continue to account for only a small portion of all outpatient visits and all telehealth visits. They also found some interesting patterns on how interstate telehealth has changed.
