MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – UW Health Kids experts say this summer is the perfect time to draw attention to children who may be facing permanent stress due to the pandemic, and have given some tips for parents who have little free time with their children, said UW Health Kids.

One of the stress-relieving experts they recommended is awareness, which they describe as “the practice of bringing awareness and awareness into the present moment and a way to acknowledge one’s thoughts and feelings”. Yoga is another recommendation given by UW Health experts.

“These activities benefit both parents and children and can be a potentially effective therapy for children facing emotional, mental, physical and behavioral conditions,” said Dr. Little Mathur, a pediatrician and mental health professional from UW Health Kids.

Exercises such as yoga, exercises that combine physical posture, meditation and regulated breathing, can be especially helpful for practicing focus, Mathur added. “Yoga offers liberation from today’s fast-paced and technologically difficult world.”

Yoga and awareness have great benefits for children, according to UW Health, including helping those who may suffer from ADHD, depression, anxiety, school success, sleep, behavioral problems, and eating disorders.

Recommendations for the time spent on these activities may vary, but the American Academy of Pediatrics says that between a few to 45 minutes of exercise a day is appropriate depending on the age of the participants.
