Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Department of Mental Health (DMH) is pleased to announce the launch of the Vermont Child Psychiatry Access Program (VT-CPAP) in response to the growing need for mental health care for young people following the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The primary care community has repeatedly expressed a desire for greater and more timely access to child psychiatrists,” said Dr. Wendy Davis, of the Vermont Child Health Improvement Program (VCHIP), professor of pediatrics, Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and member of the National Committee. American Academy of Pediatrics. “VT-CPAP responds to this need by providing quick access in minutes instead of months.”

VT-CPAP is a telephone counseling service that supports primary care providers (PCPs) in addressing and treating children’s mental health problems within their practice. The consultation will help with diagnosis, medication, psychotherapy recommendations, and community recommendations. Registration for the program is free for all PCPs in the state that serve individuals 21 years of age and younger.

Hosted by Community Health Centers (CHCs), VT-CPAP will expand the integration of mental health into pediatric primary care through consultation, training and technical assistance.

“CHC has a strong working relationship with the Department of Mental Health and this partnership is in line with our vision to be a model of excellence in providing innovative healthcare services while working on fully integrated healthcare,” said Jeffrey McKee, CEO, PsyD.

“This type of initiative is a significant step in the right direction towards the more integrated, holistic care we want to achieve through the work of the Mental Health Integration Council,” said Deputy Commissioner Alison Krompf. “DMH is grateful for the collaborating partnerships responsible for establishing this program.”

VT-CPAP is co-funded by a private donor through the Vermont Community Foundation and a five-year federal grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The program is part of an approach to child mental health care and is a joint effort between CHC, VCHIP and DMH.
