ASHEVILLE – A downtown retail space will fill the need for butcher shops; a hemp gourmet food truck opens; and entries are open for the sweet and spicy talent show.

Spreading out

What started as a part-time project blossomed into a full-time career in meat products for Lindsey DiMartino. Read also : Can canning cause botulism?.

DiMartino is the owner of Asheville Charcuterie Co., which was founded in March 2021.

“It was amazing and wonderful and more than I could have honestly expected to happen,” she said. “In the middle of last year, I started to realize that it was getting a little bit bigger than we thought it was going to be.”

DiMartino shares a kitchen with another business and sells his collection of handmade butcher boards to customers through Provisions Mercantile in Biltmore Village and The Marquee in the River Arts District.

Soon, the entrepreneur will have a retail space dedicated to AVL Charcuterie Co. DiMartino plans to open a brick-and-mortar store at 77 Walnut St. in spring 2023. in the city center.

AVL Charcuterie Co. plates. they feature products such as cured meats, cheeses, fresh fruit, crackers, pickles, nuts, sauces and jam. Custom boards are available.

Sausage boards are popular for weddings, dates, bachelorette parties, get-togethers, and other occasions big and small.

“Charcuterie is something I’ve always enjoyed. The biggest thing for me was being able to give these wonderful things to people that were affordable and kind of a casual dining option. Asheville has so many sit-down caterers; it’s nice to have a casual option, which is more affordable and elevated, but reasonable at the same time.”

At the new location, DiMartino will continue to host meat-making workshops. It also plans to be available as an event space and daytime cafe where guests can relax and enjoy appetizers and drinks.

Hemp farm-to-food truck

A new food truck will soon be making its way through town, selling handmade pasta made from plant-based hemp. Read also : Are you traveling to Germany? Here’s what Americans need to know..

Franny Tacy is branching out from being the founder and CEO of Franny’s Farmacy and Franny’s Farm and adding food truck operator to her resume.

Franny’s Farmacy is an Asheville-based retail store that supplies hemp products, and Tacy operates a hemp farm in Leicester.

Tacy has partnered with chef and yoga instructor Mike Ptaszek to create a line of “high-protein hemp-based artisanal pasta” called Pasta & Prana. Gourmet products are available at the local market as fresh frozen pasta bags for convenient home preparation.

The last weekend in July, Pasta & For the first time, the Prana food truck will serve hot plates of Franny’s Fettucine, Leaf Linguine and New World gluten-free gnocchi.

Pasta & The Prana food truck will be at the Love, Shine, Play Festival (formerly the Asheville Yoga Festival) July 28-31.

Starting next week will be Pasta & Prana will be open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Franny’s Farmacy, 231 Biltmore Ave. across from McCormick Field.

The company states that the products are made in small batches with locally grown, ethically sourced, natural whole food ingredients and protein-rich hemp heart meal sourced from Victory Hemp Foods.

Catering services are available. Online ordering and delivery will soon be available through local grocer Mother Earth Food.

Calling all gingerbreaders

It’s July, but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to start thinking about the holiday season. On the same subject : This Fourth of July, Aim to Be Free from Food Waste.

It’s time for mediciners to start preparing for the 30th National Medicine House Competition, which is open to adults, teenagers, youth and children.

Applications are open until Nov. 14.

The competition will be hosted by the Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville, where the winners will be announced on November 21st.

Several new aspects have been announced for this year’s event.

More than $40,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to winners in four age categories, a 60 percent increase over previous years.

Six new special awards and increased awards will be added in four age categories: Best Use of Sprinkles, Most Unique Ingredient, Longest Competitor, Best Use of Color, Pop Culture Star, Most Innovative Structure and Best Use of Spices.

All registered contestants will be able to vote for their favorite entry for the new People’s Choice: Best in Show award.

The jury consists of nationally known food, art and media experts. Joining this year as the 10th judge will be Ashleigh Shanti, chef and owner of Good Hot Fish, recent “Top Chef” contestant and 20202 James Beard finalist.
