Utica Food Pantry Executive Director Heather Wasielewski had a pretty busy Friday morning outside the Upstate Family Health Center in Utica.
Volunteers and staff were hard at work as more than 100 people lined up for food.
“Within an hour it was all gone,” Wasielewski said.
One person who participated was Utica resident Francisco Esmurria.
“I think it’s pretty awesome. It’s really cool. When you don’t have anything to eat for a snack, you have a snack,” Esmurria said.
West Utica is considered a food desert, a place where affordable, quality food is not available nearby.

“It would be nice to have a small market here, like in this general area,” Esmurria said. With inflation at its highest level in 40 years, organizers are hoping for more giveaways, bringing the food pyramid into a food desert.
Organizers said leftover food, such as green vegetables and bread, will be donated.
