This is still a tough economy. Inflation makes it difficult to stretch the budget. One of the biggest expenses in a family is food. However, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), nearly a third of post-harvest food is wasted. And much of that waste is unnecessary.

It’s not because consumers are careless with money; they just don’t understand the labeling on cans, dairy, or meat. These products don’t say “throw me out after this date” or “don’t eat this after this date”. The labels used on today’s foods seem indecipherable.

To clear up the confusion, the USDA provides guidance on its website on how to interpret the labels that cause the most problems for consumers.

Product dating (or open dating), which uses a calendar date, is used by the manufacturer or retailer to give consumers an idea of the time period when the product tastes best. These are the typical dates found on cans and other packaging.

Closed Dating is a code consisting of a series of letters or numbers applied to the product to identify the date and time of manufacture. It has little to do with durability. Additionally, with the exception of infant formula, the product dating we see on our edible foods is not required by law.

It’s important to remember that although the dates listed are primarily for the grocer to ensure produce is as fresh as possible on the shelf, products consumed after the product date are still edible are. Perishable products degrade over time and must be checked for spoilage before consumption. Depending on how they are stored, preserves can still be eaten for six months after the best-before date has expired. Meat, poultry and vegetables can be perfectly fine within a week of the best before date, provided the item has been refrigerated or properly stored.

Common sense must be applied. If the food looks or smells spoiled, throw it out, no matter what the label says. Food on the shelf or refrigerated items will spoil over time, so you cannot store food products indefinitely, no matter how well packaged.

Some of the packaging regulations are:

According to the USDA website: “To reduce food waste, it is important that consumers understand that dates applied to food are for quality, not safety. Food products are safe to eat after the date on the label, and regardless of the date, consumers should assess the quality of the food before consumption.”

Food must be handled properly to ensure it is safe to eat. If meat or poultry has been improperly thawed or is handled by people who do not have good hygiene habits, the food can become contaminated and unfit for consumption. For more information on food safety, visit usda.gov/foodsafety.
