LANSING, Mich. (WNEM) – The Food Bank Council in Michigan is seeking state support as food costs rise, which also raises demand for emergency food.

“An inflation rate in excess of 8 percent means families are served and food bank donations don’t go that far in filling the gap,” Knight said.

In addition, the FBCM expects the emergency allocations of the Supplementary Food Aid Program (SNAP) to end once the public health emergency is resolved later this year. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services estimates that 60,000 SNAP participants will receive benefits reduced to $ 20 per month (minimum amount), and another 50,000 participants will have benefits reduced to $ 50 per month.

“The result is longer queues at our distributors as our food becomes smaller and more expensive. We are preparing now, but our trend data is already showing a marked increase in the needs of our network, ”Knight said.
