Freshpet has recalled a batch of its Select Fresh From the Kitchen Home Cooked Chicken recipe because it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. The collected food comes in a 4.5-pound bag and has an expiration date of October 29, 2022, according to an announcement by the US Food and Drug Administration.
Pet food brand Freshpet is recalling a batch of its dog food because it may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The product recall is for Freshpet Select Fresh From the Kitchen Home Cooked Chicken Recipe (4.5 lb bag) with a sell-by date October 29, 2022, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
According to Freshpet, the affected lot has a UPC code of 627975011673 and can be found with the expiration date on the back and bottom of the product.
Although you usually hear about people getting Salmonella, dogs and other animals can also get the bacteria.
Dogs with Salmonella infections may have symptoms of lethargy, diarrhea, fever and vomiting, according to the FDA.
The FDA also notes that “children, the elderly and the immunocompromised” may be at risk if they come into contact with products contaminated with Salmonella.
Symptoms to watch out for in people with suspected Salmonella poisoning include the following:
Freshpet is asking consumers not to use any recalled products if they have any, although the company has announced that it has not received any reports of illness, injury or adverse reaction.
If you fed your pet any of the collected dog foods and your pet is showing symptoms, contact your veterinarian, says the FDA.
Dog food may have been sold at Walmart stores in Alabama and Georgia, as well as Target stores and other select retailers in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and the US territory of Puerto Rico.
