The Neighborhood Harvest (TNH), a Suffolk-based food service and hydroponic farm, hosted a group of students from Norfolk Academy last week, teaching them about the benefits and benefits of hydroponics as well as how the organization deals with food insecurity.
The basis of the TNH strategy is to collaborate with local organizations such as the Greater Works and the Access College Foundation. The training day started in the greenhouse area, where students who helped to plant new crop rows and learn how the hydroponic system works, were still transporting water throughout the plant roots.
The students “loved to plant fully,” said Heather Thompson of THN, who helped plan and manage the event.
Afterwards, the students visited the package house, learned how to order products and carefully packed before going to customer homes, The House of Bread and families that are part of the free program THN and Access College Foundation.
Finally, students visited The House of Bread, learning how consumer choice makes a real difference to needy families. Market-based foods allow people to choose the foods they need and enjoy them based on the number of family members who eat them regularly, free of charge.
“What consumers choose to do is to restore people’s dignity,” said Valerie Baker, whose family, church and volunteers have been working at the grocery store since January.
