A non-profit foundation calls for more attention to food hygiene in schools.

The Reckitt Global Hygiene Institute was established in 2020 to build a research group that can contribute to decision making to improve public health. It is funded by a $25 million multi-year grant from Reckitt, a consumer health and hygiene company.

In the past, food hygiene classes were common in schools as part of a class called home economics. The link between food preparation, safety and health would be explained through information shared about protecting food from contamination, storing it in a way that keeps bacteria at bay and destroying any organisms that could pose a problem.

In recent years, however, this topic has waned or turned into a biweekly optional food technology class. By making it non-mandatory, there are young adults who may leave school without knowing how to protect themselves and others from harmful bacteria in the kitchen, the institute said, raising the issue on World Food Safety Day.

Food hygiene is often self-taught or knowledge is passed on within a household. While some restaurants, hotels and bars offer basic training, formal education is lacking.

Simon Sinclair, executive director of the Reckitt Global Hygiene Institute, said the situation is “pretty amazing” as food hygiene can be critical to health and the economy.

“Having knowledge about food preparation standards, including hand washing and sanitizing, when and how food should be reheated and how it should be stored, can be an important weapon against disease and infection,” he said.

Supporting research into and implementation of hygiene and food safety in the science and health curriculum in schools could protect the food and beverage industry while protecting people’s health and well-being.

The more people understand and know how to implement improved food hygiene measures, the lower the risk of illness, absenteeism and industry disruption, the institute said.

“Access to more information about where food and hygiene intersect, the most impactful practices people can adopt when preparing and cooking food, and how to implement it more widely, will empower the food and beverage industry and the health and science sector. just amplify it,” Sinclair said.

Meanwhile, the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) said it was time to clearly identify the main culprits responsible for the effects of food production leading to illness and disease.

Comments aimed at raising public awareness of the need to pay more attention to hygiene rules in the storage and handling of food are misleading if strict measures are not taken to control the use of pesticides and the intensive animal husbandry, the group said.

It added that there are reports from countries in the Southern Hemisphere about the use of chemicals banned by the same international bodies that celebrate World Food Safety Day.

An example was given from Thailand, where traces of dangerous pesticides that have been banned from the market have been found in analyzed samples. Consumption of contaminated fruits and vegetables can have serious health consequences for children.

The WFTU said it stood alongside workers and farmers around the world and strongly denounced the agro-industrial system primarily responsible for disease and contamination. The group called for a ban on all products harmful to the health of workers and consumers, and demanded respect for the rights of workers and farmers.
