Issa Rae on 2022 Business Class Live with American Express

Fears of recession and inflation are causing small business owners to consider how they can pivot quickly.

For its 10th annual program, American Express, a strong supporter of small businesses, is bringing back the popular Business Class LIVE conference. On July 20, the day-long event was held at the Javits Center in New York, and admission in person or online was free. This free event is designed to inspire and support small business owners and leaders from all walks of life with strong relationships and professional experience. It brings the energy and fun of in-person panels and workshops with experts on cash flow, marketing strategies, contract opportunities, and workplace health to small business owners from all over the world.

The Business Class LIVE event series connects you with other business owners, helps you learn from industry experts and entrepreneurs, and gives you the edge you need to face the road ahead with confidence. Check out clips of previous episodes below and stay tuned for details on our next event.

A star-studded lineup of speakers and authors, all of whom were minority and women business leaders and small business owners. Among them were:

For(bes) Culture had the opportunity to speak with Clayton Ruebensaal, vice president, global B2B marketing at American Express, about what the conference entailed in addition to celebrity creator and star Issa Rae.

Mr. Ruebensaal said that the company is committed to supporting small businesses and can discuss the situation of small businesses, especially with sales issues, the number of open job opportunities and the possibility of a recession.

According to Ruebensaal Amex aims to help businesses do more business. “To solve the most pressing problems faced by small business owners, we created the Business Class. We knew that when the pandemic happened, we had to increase our efforts as small businesses were struggling with problems that had never been analyzed and lacked information. This conference, which was free to attend, is a global, international initiative that explains that What is business education by providing small business owners with information and content relevant to their lifestyles. Its goal is to democratize access to the most valuable information.”

Rae added his thoughts on the importance of Business Class Live and expressed his excitement for the opportunity to represent small business owners.

“Just being able to look people in the eye makes me happy. There is nothing more satisfying than interacting with others and seeing their faces. I put a lot of emphasis on developing the people in your immediate community. Being small business owners, we can all learn from each other and give each other advice because in a way, we are all in the same boat. I personally run a small business. It was an honor to gain knowledge from the interactions I had with other small business owners,” said Rae.

Ruebensaal, adds the event offers a great opportunity to create long-lasting relationships, learn new skills, and build a reliable network that can be used long after the event.

“This allows small businesses the opportunity to meet one-on-one with representatives of government agencies or large companies to talk about real business opportunities that can help them in important ways.”

Rae is a strong advocate for making it easier for consumers to find black-owned businesses, but she also discusses how women-owned and minority-owned businesses should support each other.

“You cannot be intimidated by other businesses. We at Hilltop are close to another Black coffee shop. It’s not like we promote another store and tell customers to go there as it is; they will do the same for us. Sweet Life is the name of my show. All Sip & Sonder and Hilltop were used as locations, in addition to Haron coffee. Supporting each other as Black businesses will only benefit our businesses. Although it’s good to sometimes have a competitive mindset, it’s also important to support each other,” says Rae.

While Rae is known for supporting everything and everyone Black, the goal is to find other big companies other than American Express on how to move the needle forward.

Rae tells us American Express has been very ambitious over the past few years, highlighting black-owned businesses.

“For many years, they have supported small businesses. I believe that other businesses should take a cue from this and make this a year-round initiative rather than just something that happens during Black History Month. Amex has been thinking about continuing to connect with business owners that I recommend to them. That is important and can mean the difference between being able to feed your family or not having a chance with a platform to attract new eyes and customers to their services or business,” says Rae.

Rae plans to help expand her small business, Hilltop Coffee to LAX. The coffee shop currently has three locations in Los Angeles, Inglewood, and Eagle Rock.

“I am very happy. We’ll be at LAX as the place to go whenever you’re hungry, need a coffee or a snack. Being able to represent LA at the airport as a local business is amazing. We will be near Randy’s Donuts, one of the biggest in Inglewood. It is very satisfying to know travelers will know that the restaurant they are buying from is an LA Black-owned institution. I am grateful for this opportunity. It is not always the case that we can find these stores that way. There was a goal behind this from the city of LA. We feel blessed to be there,” explains Rae.
