PHILADELPHIA HOME, NEW YORK (WWNY) – It’s usually the heat that takes a bite out of your budget. But with warmer weather here, utility companies are telling customers higher energy prices are here to stay.
At North Country Store, a deli in the city of Philadelphia, the cost of refrigerating meat and cheeses is rising sharply this year.
“The cost of groceries is already going up. I mean, everything I buy is looking at a 20 to 50% increase, ”said store manager Matthew Montroy.
He says his business is feeling the pain from inflation from all sides, including his electricity bills.
“They went from just over $ 900 to just over $ 2,000,” he said.
Montroy managed to reduce that bill slightly by choosing another energy supplier. But as things go up this summer, he knows he’s going to pay more to keep things cool.
“We put our air conditioners on, and we have all these coolers that are running much longer because you have to keep the temperatures in your coolers,” he said.
Montroy says it’s a great line to walk. He wants to keep his electricity bill down, but he can’t cut back on the energy he uses to keep the cold cuts cold. He says his team is careful to conserve energy.
“One thing we like to do is make sure we have proper seals on the coolers and things like that,” he said.
National Grid encourages customers to use up-to-date appliances, which are more energy efficient, run only full loads of laundry and in the dishwasher, set your refrigerator to 38 degrees, and minimize the number of hours the door opens.
Montroy says another issue he is seeing is finding labor to repair appliances when they break down. He says some companies have gone out of business and have to pay more when a Syracuse company travels there.
Montroy says he and other small business owners want to keep prices as low as possible for their customers, but that this is a very difficult task.
