In early 2021, even the average average reader of the best lists might well ask, “Who is Colleen?” Not so today, after a series of reviews on BookTok that pushed an impressive handful of five books by Colleen Hoover — three of those names back — to top the entire list and best seniors for the first half of 2022. It Ends with Us was #1 on the seniors list. and #1 overall in the first six months of the year; four of Hoover’s titles, including one, earned the top 10 overall, and five earned the top 10 in the senior category. She wasn’t the only one to get BookTok on the list, either: Taylor Jenkins Reid’s The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was #5 on both lists, and Madeline Miller’s The Song of Achilles was also on top the parent list at #17.
The Hollywood adaptation, remains the queen, with Delia Owens’s perennially bestselling Where the Crawdads Sings back at #2 on the adult and overall courtesy lists of a new film, and two books three in Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty series made the top 10 on the YA list after a series of series on Amazon Prime Video.
All of these titles are fiction, which has been around for a while, but the market for non -fiction adults remains difficult, with only two titles advertised in the top 10 overall. -James Clear’s Atomic Habits at #4 and Brené Brown’s Atlas of the Heart at #9 — although seven others were included in the top 20.
In the children’s category, strong writers remain strong. Dr. Seuss’s Oh, Places to Go! was #1 — as usual in the middle of the year, when the graduation season generated a lot of title sales — and Eric Carle’s book The Very Hungry Caterpillar was #3 . The rest of the list is full of awards by former PW of the Year Dav Pilkey, his Cat Kid Comic Club comic book — a horror game of another great series, Dog Man— and Alice Schertle and Jill McElmurry, her Little Blue. It continues to sell car books. Three books in Scott Cawthorn’s Five Nights at Freddy’s series hit the YA list, which is topped by Holly Jackson’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.
