Rachel Atherton believes that when you mean something, things fall into place.

He knows this from his own experience. In two years, he came up with the idea of a children’s book and published four books.

Although his background was not in writing, it was with children. Atherton, who has lived in Chelsea since December, has more than ten years of experience in pre-primary education and cognitive and behavioral therapy. When he and his wife, Casey, lived in Nashville, he worked as the director of a private early learning center.

“My passion has been working with children all my life, especially from infancy to age 6,” he said. “I’ve always had this creative gene and these fun little stories, and many of them are based on the kids in my classroom.”

In March 2020, Atherton sat down and wrote the concept for his first book. He shared it with his father, who told him he had something to do. However, Atherton said his self-confidence was not high enough at the time, and he wondered if anyone else would like it.

After rewriting it a few times and deciding to make it a rhyming book, she presented the finished project to her husband in August 2020 and then shared it with a few people. Their positive reactions helped to increase the woman’s confidence.

He found an illustrator in Ireland, saying he was “really lucky and couldn’t find anyone better.” He had the illustrations in the book ready to be completed a month after their zoom call.

“Seeing the illustration with the words I wrote, it came to life and was much more tangible,” Atherton said.

His father assisted him in the editing process and compiled a digital layout of the book, which was sent to the publisher. He received good news the next day.

“My father called me and asked,‘ Do you want a publishing contract? ’And I started crying,” he said. “I wrote three more books, illustrated them all, and published them very soon after they signed me.”

All of his books are based on animals and, incidentally, African books. The first was “Ostrich Can’t Fly,” followed by “Hip Hip Hooray: A Hippo Parade,” then “Momma Meerkat.”

In November 2021, he published a Christmas book called “Very Merry Penguin,” which, according to Atherton, is based on his wife, who loves penguins.

“It happened faster than I expected,” he said. “Looking back now, there seems to be little time to get the four books on the shelf.”

Her overall mission is to give children books to stimulate their imagination and creativity. According to him, the importance of early literacy is close to his heart.

“I want every book to shine a light on readers and make them feel inspired and empowered,” he said. “It’s never too early to read to children, and it helps build self-confidence, preserve memory and improve reading performance.”

Atherton said he already has several ideas for future books, but after greeting his first child at the end of May, he will take a break from writing for a while.

“I can take the time to be with her and, above all, be a mother, and I will continue writing when I get back on track. “My books are in kindergarten, and I can’t wait to read them to him,” he said.
