Animal lovers always look for great stories that involve animals. We who adopt pets see them as major figures in our daily lives, and absolutely they should. So why not look for a book or even a movie where animals are a big part of the story? These are the 10 best books where dogs are the main focus.
And because I can’t help myself, as I’m a big cat lover, I’ve also included a little surprise at the end of this piece for cat lovers, so please keep reading to the end.

10. Cujo by Stephen King

Cujo is now a famous horror novel (and movie) by his own horror master, Stephen King. First published in 1981, the story follows Cujo, a rabid Saint Bernard who attacks his mother and son… leading to a scene where they are both locked in a car while Cujo tries to enter for obvious reasons.
Now there must be pathos here for the dog mainly, because he is experiencing this condition because of bat bites. The disabled mother and the innocent son are also victims, but in the end, even the King points to a more sad tone in the narrative where pathos is made for dogs primarily and dogs alone.
9. The Art Of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
The book was released in 2008 and follows the story of Enzo, a dog who believes if he is truly ‘ready,’ then he will reincarnate in his next life as a human, so he starts studying with his adoptive father, Denny. Swift, race car driver.
The book takes us from the fantasy spectrum to the real place when Enzo sees Denny spend some incredible time. 7. Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
True, the book was specifically a ‘children’s novel,’ but didn’t that stop Harry Potter from being a bestseller in the world among adults right now? Of course not, and this gem here should be no different.
The story follows Marty Preston, who takes it upon himself to rescue an abused dog; she stole him and cared for him in secret.
This is a perfect example of when nothing is lying, even if it’s hard to keep telling them. Finally, anything worth doing when the lives of animals are innocent and no defense is at stake. At least that’s what was taught by this book when I first read it.
The book becomes heavy before the end, but is read with Marty and Shiloh until the end. If you haven’t read this gem, please do.
6. The Call of the Wild by Jack London
The next two books will definitely be together. They are both classic novels by author Jack London.
London often writes about sled dogs, as he spent a massive part of his life in northern Canada. He was a prospector who dug gold in the Yukon at one time in his life, being the inspiration for these two easily designated stories for sure.
The story itself is an epic adventure. In this story, the main perpetrator is a dog named Buck … a dog that was stolen and made to work as a sled dog. The novel follows many of his adventures in that realm and that of others when he ages.
The film was also made from this book… released a few years ago, starring Harrison Ford himself.
5. White Fang by Jack London
In this book, London specifically sees wolves and as wikipedia.com states, London often writes about dogs for: “… exploring how animals see the world and how they see humans …” The book was also adapted into a film, starring . the incomparable Ethan Hawke.
Interestingly, between the two books by London, it is here to show the violent side of both couples – man and dog – and it’s very interesting as a general study.
That same violence is also studied by London in his short story, “To Build Fire,” a terrifying tale about a musher who is stranded in the north during a cold spell. In the end we determine just who is shrewder and more able to survive in such a situation: Man or dog?
You will be surprised to know anyone who survived the freeze.
4. A Dog’s Life: The autobiography of a stray by Ann M. Martin
Ann M. Martin is of course the author of the very popular Baby-Sitters Club book series. The women certainly knew how to weave stories together that people collectively cared about, and the boys also do that here, telling stories of stray dogs.
Here doggy is a female dog named Squirrel all things. Readers follow him on many adventures and yes, it wouldn’t be a story about dogs if there wasn’t some time to touch. Okay… there are more than a few, but this book is worth the time.
3. Travels With Charlie: In Search of America by John Steinbeck
These last three books seem to be on a much higher scale in terms of important works that are beyond just books that have animals that play an integral part of the story. These are era-changing stories that lead every author into an untouched realm, really.
These books are listed with many of his other works as well, but these three are here to help me to end this piece with good and prove the point that books that have animals in them sometimes have the most important element in life: Tender… many qualities are lost on this earth.
I don’t mean to be too downer here, but in the end it’s true. The relationship between humans and animals is a strong and important one that by Buddhism, humans and even doctors have tried to know, and finally no one can, because these little creatures can’t talk for communication, and oh so. Much can be learned in that type of relationship, as all the books on this list prove.
The title is pretty clear here, but Steinbeck, who also writes Of Mice and Men and many other classics, sees this perfect example in this type of road trip story (real story), where two buds are best to deal with. long, dusty road ahead.
2. Timbuktu by Paul Auster
Now talk about weight. It is here to take the reader on a journey with Mr. Bones, the dog whose adoptive father is a person who has no earth.
Now alone is a difficult life, both for dogs and humans, but things get worse because Mr. Bones has to deal with the fact that his father on earth died.

1. Big Sur by Jack Kerouac
Now speaking of the master of the craft, to my estimation, there is no greater writer, living or dead, than Jack Kerouac.
And okay… you got me. There are no dogs in this story, but you should have something for those who like cats outside. Trust me I know, be a self.
And what a pivotal character the cat is in this story turns out.
The story follows Jack Duluoz (who is of course Kerouac’s own alter-ego). Jack will fictionalize the actual events of his life and put them into novel form, changing the names of everyone involved in the particular story he must tell.
In this book, the reader finds Jack tired … Jack is frustrated with the type of success he found after years of rejection.
He decides to take a trip up to Big Sur in California in order to gather himself and reflect, but right near the beginning of the trip Jack is decimated to hear the news that his cat, Tyke, has died. The news destroys him and sends Jack on a spiral that in real life many have speculated led to some of his early deaths later in 1969. He is 47. The book transpires in 1960 or there.
If you’ve ever lost a loved animal, then you all know how Jack felt at the beginning of this story. It’s one of his greatest works and really takes a look at the emotional hold animals can have on us humans, and how their deaths can affect us as we try to deal with the many, many complications of our lives.
