Summer may be winding down, but there are even more new movies and shows to watch this weekend on Netflix, Prime Video, Disney Plus, and other streaming services. When it comes to streaming entertainment, the pipe is never closed.

This weekend’s slate is led by the series reimagining A League of Their Own, the classic underdog sports flick. A new crop of Rockford Peaches is directed by Abbi Jacobson, while Chanté Adams takes the spotlight to portray a black perspective absent from the film.

Other new series include Hurricane Katrina disaster drama Five Days at Memorial, Marvel animated shorts from I Am Groot and zombie spinoff Tales of the Walking Dead. The big returning TV show is Mindy Kaling’s teen comedy Never Have I Ever season 3.

On the movie side, Jamie Foxx is a vampire hunter in Day Shift, while Owen Wilson leads the superhero family adventure Secret Headquarters.

Here’s our guide to what to watch this weekend. And when you’re done here, find out the best movies of the year so far and where to stream them (opens in a new tab), and why the DC Universe is looking more and more like a disaster (opens in a new tab).

A League of Their Own (Prime Video)

Reboots of classic movies are almost always a really bad idea, but the new series release of A League of Their Own may prove to be an exception. Like the movie, it’s set in the 1940s, when the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was founded as many male players fought in World War II. The new take combines the original’s baseball action and rousing feminism with deeper explorations of race and sexuality.

This is evident in the presence of a black leader, Chanté Adams as Max, alongside Abbi Jacobson’s Carson. Plus, a sexual awakening seems to be in store, as Carson is attracted to teammate Greta (D’Arcy Carden). They’re part of a completely different cast of characters, though Nick Offerman’s gruff manager, Dove Porter, seems analogous to Tom Hanks’ Jimmy Dugan. Never Have I Ever season 3 (Netflix)

OMG, Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) has a boyfriend! And not just any boyfriend – the handsome and popular Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet). They’re together, like publicly, and she can’t believe her luck. But neither do her high school friends, whose skepticism sends Devi spiraling. A lack of confidence isn’t really appealing and can end up pushing Paxton away.

Then there’s academic rival Ben Gross (Jaren Lewison), who still seems to have a crush on her after their nearly five-minute relationship. Their easy banter and shared interests stand in stark contrast to her relationship with Paxton. See the article : They’ve Lost Their Best Series. Things get even more complicated with the introduction of an Indian teenager (Anirudh Pisharody) who turns out to be very sexy. This potential love quadrangle might be too advanced a problem for Devi to solve.

Five Days at Memorial (Apple TV Plus)

John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) and Carlton Cuse (Lost) team up to adapt Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Sheri Fink’s non-fiction book about the impact of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath on a hospital in New Orleans. This may interest you : Netflix partners with Microsoft on ad-supported subscription plan.

The story is framed by an investigation into how 45 patients ended up dying in hospital during the natural disaster, one of the worst in American history. Deploying flashbacks, the limited series depicts the utter chaos caused by lack of power, food, water, and near-silence from the authorities and higher levels of the organization. Doctors and staff (played by a terrific cast including Vera Farmiga, Cornelius Smith Jr, Adepero Oduye and Cherry Jones) are doing all they can in the face of the crushing disaster – but as we all know, tragically, it won’t be. not enough.

I Am Groot (Disney Plus)

I am Groot. I am Groot. I am Groot. I am GROOT. I… am… Groot. OK, sorry, now it’s out of my system: Disney Plus has released this 20-minute Marvel snack consisting of five animated shorts depicting the life of young Groot. It takes place between the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and one of the post-credits scenes of this film.

Like its big older siblings, the series blends quirky humor, charming irreverence, and a touch of darkness, all while being utterly adorable. The episodes follow Groot from his first literal steps out of his flowerpot through adolescence. Vin Diesel reprises his voice role, while Bradley Cooper’s Rocket Raccoon makes a guest appearance. Although it’s shorter, the streaming service hopes the quality of I Am Groot will make people forget about the Disney Plus price hike.

Day Shift (Netflix)

Jamie Foxx and Snoop Dogg as vampire hunters? It sounds like a premise concocted on a foggy, lazy evening. It’s actually the culmination of decades of hard work in Hollywood by longtime stuntman and fight coordinator in John Wick films, J.J. Perry.

Foxx plays Bud Jablonski, who works hard to support his family as a blue-collar pool cleaner by day. By night, he’s a freelance vampire slayer trying to re-enter the cushy international syndicate. Bud was kicked out for breaking various rules, but his friend Big John tries to get him back in the band for pay and benefits. He’ll have to put on his best behavior while trying to make enough money to keep his wife and daughter from drifting away.

Secret Headquarters (Paramount Plus)

After a first foray into the superhero genre with Loki, Owen Wilson will seek a second help outside of the MCU in this family film. While on a camping trip with his wife and son, Wilson’s character witnesses an alien ship crash. It contains a mysterious glowing orb that proclaims Jack to be “the Guardian”, forever altering his life and relationships.

Walker Scobell of The Adam Project once again takes on the role of a resentful son. Years after the accident, Charlie sadly puts up with his workaholic father’s many absences and excuses. He doesn’t realize that his hero known as The Guard is his own father! That is, until Jack is called by a “computer emergency” and Charlie invites his friends over. They stumble upon The Guard’s lair and play too much with its technology, putting them in the crosshairs of agents bent on stealing the mighty orb.

13: The Musical (Netflix)

The Broadway musical 13 was the first production to feature an all-teenage cast and band, one of whom was then-unknown Ariana Grande. Before her superstar musical career, even before her time on Nickelodeon, Grande had her 13-year break. Now, a new generation of teenage artists are taking on the musical.

The story follows 12-year-old Evan Goldman (Eli Golden) as he moves from New York to small-town Indiana following his parents’ divorce. He befriends his classmate and neighbor Patrice, who has a crush on him. Evan is determined to throw the best bar mitzvah ever, which depends on popular kid Brett and his team being there, even if it means hurting Patrice in the process. He soon discovers that growing up can be very complicated.

Tales of the Walking Dead (AMC)

The Walking Dead Universe is getting another spinoff in this six-part anthology series focusing on new and established characters battling the zombie apocalypse. The OG show is nearing its end, after experiencing a precipitous drop in ratings and cultural relevance, but AMC will never let this valuable property die. In addition to Tales, there are upcoming spinoffs based on Rick and Michonne, Maggie and Negan, and Daryl (minus Carol).

Tales features a cast including Olivia Munn, Samantha Morton, Terry Crews, Parker Posey, Anthony Edwards, and Poppy Liu. In one episode, Morton reprises his role as Alpha in what appears to be an origin story. Other installments play around with tone, storytelling styles, and timelines, making it probably the most forward-thinking TWD project yet.

Locke and Key season 3 (Netflix)

The end has come for the fantasy series based on the comics by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez. The third and final season concludes the story of the Locke family, whose sprawling ancestral home contains magical keys as well as a portal to a demonic realm.

The final chapter finds the Lockes in relative peace. Older brother Tyler (Connor Jessup) erased all magic memories, while mom Nina (Darby Stanchfield) restored hers. But the whole family will have to band together to fight a new villain, Frederick Gideon (Kevin Durand), a colonial soldier possessed by a malevolent force. His plan is to use the keys to break the barrier between the human and demon realms once and for all.
