…a new research resource is [now] available from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Arts Data Profile #31 examines artists in the workforce between 2015-2019. This includes three new surveys that look at demographic and/or geographic characteristics of artists and arts managers, based on information from the US Census Bureau:

Full details can be found at arts.gov, as well as an interactive map showing, for each US state, the numerical and locational quotients for the total number of artists and for workers in the following selected arts occupations: architects; art directors, visual artists and animators; designers; dancers and choreographers; musicians; actors; entertainers; writers and authors; and photographers.

The data covers the years 2015-2019, providing data immediately before COVID-19. While it will be several years before we understand exactly how COVID-19 has affected the demographics and mobility patterns of arts workers, the data provide a baseline. These three reports reflect the NEA’s five-year plan to monitor the state of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility in the arts.
