New York (CNN Business) You’ll soon be able to sign up for a cheaper version of Netflix ad — though that option is still in its “early days.”
Netflix will partner with Microsoft on a new ad-supported subscription plan, the two companies announced Wednesday.
The partnership follows a surprise announcement in April that Netflix ( NFLX ) was open to adding lower-cost, ad-supported content to its service — something its CEO Reed Hastings has resisted for years. But the company is going through one of the toughest times in its 25-year history, after losing customers in the first quarter for the first time in a decade.
The timing of the launch of the advertising standard has not been officially announced, but the New York Times reported in May that Netflix told employees it could arrive by the end of 2022.
Netflix said on Wednesday that the move is in the “early days” and that the company has “a lot to work on” when it comes to introducing the 221.6 ad level to its customers around the world.
Microsoft’s advertising sales division will bring that new level to life. Greg Peters, Netflix’s chief operating officer and chief product officer, said in a statement Wednesday that “Microsoft has given us the flexibility to be creative” in both technology and sales, and has also promised strong privacy protections for Netflix members.
“Netflix’s long-term goal is clear: More consumer choice and a more premium, better-than-advertising television experience,” he added.
In April, Netflix reported that it lost 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter of 2022 and that it expects to lose another 2 million in the second quarter. That news sent shares tumbling — and has investors talking not only about Netflix’s future, but about the streaming business as a whole.
