Fans of Resident Evil, keep the fire burning. The new Netflix series, played by Lance Reddick as Albert Wesker, is sure to send hordes of fiery questions and perplexing glances from those looking for a faithful adaptation of the games. Is it a Resident Evil canon? If so, how does Wesker survive falling into a volcano? Here’s everything you need to know if (and how) the Resident Evil Netflix series fits into the gaming franchise.
In a way, yes. The Netflix series may be set in New Raccoon City in 2022 and post-apocalyptic Europe in 2036, but the events of the games are all part of this universe. The Raccoon City incident happened decades earlier in 1998, confirming that everything that happened in Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 is part of the Netflix series world. In essence, the TV show is a sequence of games, but it is unlikely that the games will ever refer to the TV show.
“Games are our story. Everything that happens in games exists in this world,” showrunner Andrew Dabb told us earlier this year. “So the country is here. We can’t get to season 5, but it’s in our world … The movies are a different story, but everything in the games is a backstory for the show.”
The Netflix series also jokes how the problem of Albert Wesker’s apparent “death” in Resident Evil 5 will be solved. A particularly annoying thorn in Umbrella’s side in Tijuana tells her daughters Billie and Jade that Wesker “died” before 2022 and shouldn’t be alive from the events of the TV show.
The series, therefore, will also be based on existing tradition and also be part of an established canon. Dabb also revealed to SFX that there is a “very good explanation of why [Wesker] is back and why it’s the way it is.”
There are, however, a few issues related to the story that still need to be clarified. We can safely assume Resident Evil 1-3 and Resident Evil 5 follow exactly the same plot rhythms, but the fate of some of the plots of the other games is unclear.
Umbrella, by any metric, should be dead and buried by 2022, so its resurgence in recent days is another mystery that needs to be explained in the Netflix series. And what about Chris, Claire and Leon? The Resident Evil show is meant to tell its own story for now without too many related characters, but its appearances can’t be ruled out later.
