INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) announced Tuesday that 80 classroom teachers and teaching artists will be participating in the Arts Integration Learning Labs professional development opportunity this week.

The Learning Lab, developed through a partnership between the Indiana Arts Commission and the Indiana Department of Education, is designed to empower classroom educators and teaching artists to partner together on meaningful arts integration experiences for their students. Art integration is the work of skillfully combining art learning with other learning objectives.

Two full-day courses of the Art Integration Learning Lab will be held on July 13 at the Cornerstone Arts Center in Muncie and July 15 at the Thyen-Clark Cultural Center in Jasper. The Muncie Arts and Culture Council and the Jasper Arts Community will be local partners for the training. Class educators from 20 school districts and artists from 21 different countries will participate.

“As PACE research shows, arts education is a key element in student learning and engagement.” said Miah Michaelsen, Executive Director of IAC. “This Learning Lab and subsequent scholarships will provide the training, networking, and funding to spread this work across the state for the benefit of Hoosier students.”

Learning Labs is part of the Partnering Arts, Communities, and Education (PACE) program, a research program conducted by the IAC from 2015 to 2021, which explores the impact of long-term artist residencies in elementary classrooms. Research findings from the PACE program show a clear growth and positive impact on learning outcomes and engagement of young people involved in the program. Arts Integration Learning Labs will leverage learning from the PACE program to expand the tools of educators and artists in creative teaching strategies.

After Learning Labs, educators will be eligible to apply for up to $3,000 in fellowship funding to practice their learning in their own classrooms.
