A Spectacular History
The Spectacular Spider-Man was developed by Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman and aired from 2008 to 2009 on The CWs Kids’ WB programming block. Although highly praised by many Marvel fans, The Spectacular Spider-Man was abruptly canceled after Disney’s Marvel acquisition. Through this agreement, Sony retained the rights to The Spectacular Spider-Man, but Disney was granted exclusive rights to produce Spider-Man TV content, which meant that Spectacular could not broadcast new episodes. The show would eventually be replaced by 2012’s Ultimate Spider-Man and 2017’s Marvel’s Spider-Man, which ran for four and three seasons on Disney XD, respectively. An animated Spider-Man variant also appeared in Disney +’s What If …? series, but although he was inspired by the looks of the Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart, he was voiced by the Hudson Thames instead of Tom Holland.
Sony is currently working on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the animated sequel to its Oscar-winning Marvel movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The film will see the main character Miles Morales fight against classic Spider-Man villains such as The Spot and The Vulture, as well as reintroduce Miguel O’Hara / Spider-Man 2099 as a supporting character after his Into the Spider-Verse post-credit scene. According to producer Christopher Miller, Across the Spider-Verse will contain “240 unique characters”, and includes a distinct art style per world that Miles and Gwen Stacey – this version is the hero Spider-Woman – visit. The first film was originally scheduled for release in the fall of 2022, but has since been delayed until next year, with the sequel to 2024.
