No movie could possibly capture everything that Muhammad Ali was, though this one certainly comes as close as anyone could hope. Will Smith is able to capture both the humor and bravado of the famous boxer and the deepest convictions Ali held throughout his life. Even as he authentically hits every note of the fights, Smith also shines in the moments between fights. It’s in these quiet moments of contemplating her future that you really feel a deeper connection to who Ali was. He was deeply funny and witty, truly one of the great talkers of all time, as well as being a deeply contemplative man. The strongest moments come from showing Ali’s deep opposition to the Vietnam War and how he faced long-lasting consequences for it. It was a position that would threaten his freedom and his future, making him even braver to take it. Smith pays homage to all of these parts of Ali, taking a comprehensive look at all that she was. It remains his most commanding and compelling performance that may never be equaled.
Dark Waters

One of the most honest and grounded portraits of what it means to do good against the world’s evil, Dark Waters is a masterpiece of a film that finds resonance in its riveting look at a lawyer fighting corporate corruption. Mark Ruffalo stars as Rob Bilott, a real-life corporate defense attorney facing an environmental lawsuit exposing how DuPont was poisoning the water of unsuspecting people. It’s a patient film that shows how exhausting and challenging undertaking something like this can be, revealing just how rigged things can be when you have the money to shield yourself from liability. Ruffalo is outstanding, it shows how committed Bilott was to the case while also showing the high price it cost him. Nothing is sensationalized or becomes a typical Hollywood story, as he discovers how the real world doesn’t work that way. It shows how people are only protected when men like Bilott are willing to stand up and risk it all, no matter the cost.
Dave Made A Maze

One of the lesser-known movies on this list that still deserves your full attention, Dave Made A Maze is an imaginative indie hit that makes the most of its premise. It all begins with the titular Dave (Nick Thune) struggling to express himself and find purpose in life. When he decides to build a giant cardboard maze in his apartment, he accidentally gets trapped in his labyrinthine creation. When his girlfriend Annie (Meera Rohit Kumbhani) and his friend Gordon (Adam Busch) decide to go after him, we soon discover that this cardboard world is much larger than it appears from the outside. It’s a film that is endlessly creative in playing to your expectations, making use of everything from forced perspective tricks to puppetry without skipping a beat. It’s the kind of experience you can revisit and notice something new each time, as it’s practically bursting with rich detail. There isn’t much else out there that makes it more joyous to lose yourself completely.
Hobo with a Shotgun
Cast: Rutger Hauer, Molly Dunsworth, Brian Downey
Before you say it, Hobo with a Shotgun won’t be for everyone. Chunky, violent, and generally unhinged, it’s an acquired taste, to say the least. Still, if any of those words sound like something you want to see in a movie, then you should take the plunge on this absolutely crazy ride. Starring the late Rutger Hauer in exceptional form as the titular drifter himself, this bloody homage to old low-budget exploitation thrillers is a shock to the system in the best possible way. It all centers around a homeless man who must bring justice to a corrupt town the only way he knows how. You guessed it, with a shotgun to shoot and a sense of courage to triumph over the sadism that has consumed his world. There’s so much that jumps out of the movie that it’s impossible to fully capture it, though suffice it to say there’s a lot to take in as it throws it all on the screen. If you can stand it, this one is for your sick mates.
House of Gucci

A chaotic tapestry of wealth and family, House of Gucci is one of director Ridley Scott’s best for how full of energy it is. It’s pretty long at just over two and a half hours, though it all flies by on the strength of all its central performances. It not only sees Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, and Al Pacino drop the material, but also gets wilder as it goes on. A retelling of a little history from the Gucci family, it has murder, sex and greed all rolled into one package. It often bursts at the seams and nearly spills everywhere, though there’s nothing like watching it all come apart before you. Whether you consider it a bold work of camp cinema or a stark deconstruction of the decline of wealth, it’s undeniably a one-of-a-kind experience.
Jennifer’s Body
Cast: Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, Adam Brody
You didn’t think we’d pass up the opportunity to praise the great movie that is Jennifer’s Body, did you? Misunderstood at its release, Karyn Kusama’s scathing horror comedy has now become one of the most beloved cult classics and for good reason. Not only does it see a Megan Fox never better than absolutely devouring the role, in more ways than one, but it’s more than carved out its place as one of the most enduring revenge movies in recent memory. If you haven’t seen it, stop dwelling on any misconceptions you have about the film’s mismarketing, and instead be open to everything it manages to accomplish. A film that proves that good acting can make a familiar story feel fresh, The Fighter is a boxing drama that is elevated by strong performances. Most central to this is a dynamic Christian Bale like real-life Dicky Eklund. Dicky, a former boxer now battling drug addiction, is growing apart from his half-brother Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg), who continues to struggle to provide for his family. After deciding to hang up the gloves, Micky will fight again for a great confrontation that could change his life and that of his entire family. The movie doesn’t break any molds of underdog boxing history, though it fits into them so well that you’ll just get sucked into the story. Bale, in particular, delivers a masterclass in acting, plunging into the depths of addiction and loss with a dedication that is as disturbing as it is riveting. There is a humanity to the story and its struggle, which makes it one that finds a rhythm that is its own, even when the larger narrative itself is not.
