EXCLUSIVE: Amazon’s Prime Video will not cancel a second season of its sci-fi series Night Sky starring Oscar winners Sissy Spacek and J.K. simmons The news comes a month and a half after all eight episodes of the drama’s first season, co-produced by Amazon Studios and Legendary Television, were released on May 20.

Launching with mostly positive reviews, the series failed to make a significant impact on viewers while bearing significant costs associated with its sci-fi content. But regardless of the cancellation, Night Sky has already secured its place in TV history.

Prime Video, in partnership with Amazon Web Services, SES and Intelsat, broadcast the show’s first episode into space, marking the furthest distance from Earth a TV series has been distributed and making Prime Video the first streamer to which directly disseminates its content space.

Spanning space and time, Night Sky follows Irene (Spacek) and Franklin (Simmons), a couple who years ago discovered a chamber that inexplicably leads to a strange, desolate planet. They’ve guarded their secret carefully ever since, but when an enigmatic young man (Chai Hansen) enters their lives, the Yorks’ quiet existence is quickly turned upside down – and the chamber they thought they knew so well turns out to be… much more than she could have imagined.

Also starring in the series from Amazon Studios and Legendary Television are Kiah McKirnan, Julieta Zylberberg, Rocío Hernández and Adam Bartley. Night Sky was created by Holden Miller and produced as co-executive producer, with Daniel C. Connolly serving as showrunner and executive producer. Jimmy Miller, Sam Hansen and Philip Martin also served as EPs.
